Vacation spots your friends talked up but you hated

Spot on. LA is terribly overrated.

DP. I prefer to travel to cities with interesting history.

Also, Tangier Island. The boat to it was fun, and I am glad I got to spend two hours riding around it on a golf cart before it is lost to rising water, but I don't understand why anyone would stay overnight for a few days.

I get the tangier opinion but not the one on Annapolis.

Virgina Beach (gross); Lancaster for day-trip (boring); Costa Rica (over rated).

I meant give me the mountains (in addition to a lake house). Don’t care for beaches. My bad, unclear response.

It would be a vast overstatement to say that we hated it (we didn't), but DH and I were not as taken with Asheville as many of our friends who had really talked it up. It was a nice town, but it just fell short of our expectations. Maybe it's because we visited there shortly after moving back to the east coast from the west, so the natural beauty of Asheville wasn't as striking to us.

And the homes/rentals are just not my style. Even the nice ones. I mean I'm sure there are many homes there I would like, but in general I didn't like them.

What is gross about the beaches?

It doesn't have the good, clean sand. Most of the beaches I went to were rocky and had lots of shells too ( hard on the feet). The S. carolina beaches are bigger (wider) with better sand and waves roll in better. I also think Florida has good beaches in many places and I love the beaches in nantucket and the hamptons. I found beaches in Georgia to be a bit muddy with different sand. There are different types of sand everywhere! some is stickier, muddier, rockier etc....

+1

Plus, they allow dogs on the beach, which is just gross.

Well your poopy kids in diapers are also gross.

I never been to Hawaii but have never heard anyone disappointed by it... what was your experience?

I'm guessing typical American tourist who went to Waikiki.

I suspect most tourists to Hawaii, including to Waikiki/Honolulu and every other island, are American, typical or not, given that it’s a US state.

We have visited Oahu several times and have stayed out in Ko Olina. When we have driven into Waikiki/HNL, it is full of Japanese , not Americans.

This is true. It’s 7 hours from Tokyo and 9+ from DC.

That's a silly comparison. It's six hours from L.A. to Oahu. more people on the west coast go to Hawaii than D.C.

I’ll back up the poster that said most tourists there are from asia. It’s a bunch of Asians and American military families, and some other random tourists.

Nice. But the truth:

In 2011, Hawaii saw increasing arrivals and share of foreign tourists from Canada, Australia and China increasing 13%, 24% and 21% respectively from 2010.[19] In 2014 a record 8.3 million visitors arrived to Hawaii (39.4% from the U.S. West, 20.8% from the U.S. East, 18.3% from Japan, 6.3% from Canada, 15.2% others), spending $14.7 billion.[20] The amount increased to 8.6 million visitors spending over $15 billion in 2015.[21]

Florence. The museums were not as great as I was expecting. It was also full of mosquitos and just kind of dingy.

Niagara Falls. It was so disappointing and tacky.
