Anonymous wrote:Wow 14:01: your DS sounds awesome (congrats to him and you) but I'm scratching my head and thanking my lucky stars about my DC's acceptance to Berkeley because DC's stats are SAT I <2200, SAT IIs <700, UWGPA <3.8, and not even a NM semi-finalist, and also no "hooks" (URM, first-gen, low-income). Even though it hasn't been quite a week since the decision came out, I guess DC would have heard by now if the acceptance had been sent in error .

My son got into Berkeley with the same stats as PP.

And I know a local kid who was rejected from Berkeley with the same stats.

So what do y'all think made the difference? Essay?
I thoughtuniversit of california schools just had stats reports, no big essays

They have essays as part of the application.

Can you share the stats for UC-Berkeley? It is DD's dream school....

2350 SAT I, Math II & Chem subject tests: 800, 800, unweighted GPA : 4.0, weighted GPA: 4.58, top 1% of class, US Presidential Scholar nominee, National Merit Finalist, National AP scholar, Scholastic writing award etc. etc.

What no Jefferson Scholarship! Disappointing.

DS didn't apply to UVA.

DH and I both graduated from Notre Dame and it is not the same school anymore. It is so right-wing now and DC will be uncomfortable there. We are hoping he chooses University of Michigan and it looks like he is going to! Yay!

Notre Dame really has taken a bad turn as of late. I agree with your concerns, PP. We took DC for a visit there two years ago and it was oppressive and weird. Not the school my Dad talked about in the 1970's at all.

New pp. I'm really sad to hear that. I seriously considered it many years ago and thought it was a great school.

I'm the original why poster. Sad to hear that too. I'm a grad (late 90s) and the school seems much more progressive to me than when I went.

Marquette is a great school!!! Why would anyone judge your DC for that? Very old and well known midwestern university. I think it is a great choice for a DC area kid.

Naked beer slides, anyone?

My DC is at Michigan and loves it. There is something for everyone at Michigan, and just as much school spirit as Notre Dame. And Ann Arbor is a great town.

Good for your child, and good luck. I went there. For many schools it is true that "the hardest part is getting in." Not true of Swarthmore.
