I assume it means Affair Partner. But I have wondered myself and would like someone else to confirm my assumption.

THIS !! is my thought every time im reading DCUM and ISYN

+1000000000000!!! i really hate the dear son dear husband crap. i don't like mom boss and dad boss either! it's so weird to me and you wouldn't say the phrases so why use the abbr?

I don't think this is just a DCUM thing - I see it pretty much on any message board on any subject. I don't really understand how it ever caught on - nobody I know actually says "dear husband," etc.

It's not because people use this in real life but because people starting reading message boards on phones before smart phones with on screen keyboards became prevalent. Back then people started reading with phones that only had phone keyboards where you hit the 2 key once for A, twice for B, thrice for C and so on. So they started using phone-speak (adapted license plate speak) to shorten the typing. DH, DC, etc are all only 2 characters. While it makes less sense for son it made a lot of difference for husband, daughter, child, etc.

Once started, it became standard. We need this less and less nowadays but it's still a standard used by many.
