Way to miss the point. The Reddit OP is a lying whiner because she is not disclosing all the income she has; and for some reason she believes she is too good for any number of lovely homes in the $1.5 mil range in Westchester. As for comparing NYC to other cities, you’re just wrong. I get that it is not for everyone, but in terms of density and walkability and transit, it stands alone in the US. |
Nope. I'm speaking as a parent who understands that you don't have THREE KIDS before for firing it out where you will live and where they will go to school. It's one think to have one kid before you have this figured out, but three? And then to blame circumstances that you knew to be the case before you had any kids? If OP were living in poverty or lacked education, I'd be empathetic because it can be hard to make good choices if you haven't been given many opportunities in life and are in survival mode. But she's a lawyer. A partner! She made the CHOICE to ignore her kid's needs and refuse to plan for their future. They will resent her for this later. |
I’ve never seen a person who is satisfied with their own life and secure in their choices attacking other random people’s parenting online. |
WTH are you talking about? They live in a nice neighborhood and go to decent schools. They are not living the lifestyle of rich and famous because it takes more than $850K in NYC, but she seems to have figured that out. |
Same thing can be said of 70s and 80s NYC. Past isn’t prologue. |
I’ve never met an anonymous online poster |
You don’t know their school, odds are it isn’t Horace Mann or Dalton. Also Carroll Gardens is an okay neighborhood, nothing to make these sacrifices over. |
| The more you make, the more you are charged for everything based on where you live. Zip code pricing. |
Every major city is unique. You can walk a ton in many different cities if you choose the right house or apartment. NYC isn’t so special here. You’re not walking from WV to UWS often even if you can. |
Stop digging yourself in a hole. Of course there are some pockets of walkability in all cities but nothing like the density of NYC. This density is why all the finance jobs are there which is why OP ended up there. Obviously there are ways OP could get herself to a LCOL area but she wanted to be a law partner in NYC. To complain that her apartment isn’t palatial is like complaining that water is wet. |
Exactly. There are plenty of professional jobs in Philly. And plenty of rich people living a great life. Redditor could be a big fish in a small pond in a different city. Ridiculous to imply there are no jobs but in nyc. |
Tell us you’ve never been to Chicago without telling us you’ve never been to Chicago… |
Chicago is very walkable. So is Brickell. Citadel is building a huge new office in Miami. West Palm has many asset managers. Likewise with LA and SF. Boston has many mutual funds based there. Silicon Valley has VCs out the yin yang. There’s finance in any large city in the U.S. That’s why so many suck it up for a two year analyst stint then move to another city once they have the NY experience |
You sound unhinged. I’m pretty sure the redditor is giving her kids a great upbringing with more advantages than the vast majority of the planet. Geez. Why are you so angry about where a complete stranger is making a life? |
Making 850k and forcing children to live in shared bedrooms all to live in Carrolll Gardens (lol) is not a recipe for a great upbringing. The Red Hook projects are 2-3 blocks away too. |
