Well a 4.5 and 1600 isn’t enough to get in so what made them stand out?

For the kids I know, it was ROTC and being 50% -100% URM.

For mine, it was a mix of arts and stem. Excellent arts ECs plus awards in stem and arts (in 3 areas of arts), high GPA/scores and magnet curriculum. 3 strong arts portfolios.

Other kid also had mix of arts and stem with international awards in both. Also, some other unique ECs and distinct perspective in writing. 2 strong arts portfolios. High scores and GPA.

For others we know, 1 had music w/ decent awards but oversubscribed instrument, but also had good stem awards. Another was ranked in a sport. Another had some highly ranked stem awards. All with high scores and GPAs.

Also know another one in early with humanities awards in humanities magnet and strong arts portfolio. Likely high scores and GPA.

URM for your kid(s) and/or the others?

No. If you look at the chain of posts, you'll see that my initial point is that most of the kids we know admitted are white/Asian.

I'm not sure why people are so quick to target URM kids as "taking" spots and either being "less qualified" or somehow more advantaged or both. If you've ever been on an Ivy campus, you'll see how underrepresented URMs are. If you dare to interact with some of them, you'll likely see how intelligent and engaging they are, like the other highly qualified students on campus.

Sure they did. It's fairly frequent in various degrees of subtleties (or not so subtleties) but sometimes gets deleted by Jeff when overtly egregious.

This is a valid point that I happened to post this time, but there are many others who refuse to let you or other posters denigrate students because they are URMs.

My URM with 36 ACT and 4.0 unweighted from private was deferred from Yale. Didn’t apply to Harvard because did not expect to get in. HYP turning down very qualified URM as well.

I watched their blog and have read a lot on it. They said they don't have the capacity to do that many interviews---all applicants--given the enormous number applying.

They said that they are doing interviews for Applicants that they need more information for. You may still be accepted and never get an interview.

Harvard and Princeton interview almost everyone. My son got interview requests within days of submission so I know they weren't requests based on pre-sorting or anything like that---just availability.

Legacy(12% of undergraduate) or being Jewish(12%) really increase your chances. At some of the other Ivy League the percentages get in to the 20-25%.

It wasn’t a single high school, obviously. When you’re an adult, you’ll have friends whose kids attend a number of different schools

Well, when the kid is 1/4 or less Hispanic, they often don’t look Hispanic. And even 1/2 Hispanic can look very white

Well, when the kid is 1/4 or less Hispanic, they often don’t look Hispanic. And even 1/2 Hispanic can look very white

My DH is a Hispanic immigrant and looks white. It depends on many factors. Also it’s an ethnicity, not a race. You are either Hispanic or you’re not. None of this 1/2 or 1/4 stuff.
