That is insanely low. My daughter is 22 and makes that at her first job out of college (not a top school).

Professors are paid ridiculously low given how competitive it is to get a tenure track position and how long they need to go to school and the amount of work they do. That said, the base salary is for 9 months and some get research/summer teaching pay and may earn additional royalties for patents, publishing and consulting. Also, benefits for public school profs are similar to government benefits, and private schools often include a tuition benefit for dependents. Most profs aren't in it for the money--rather the access to resources to do their research and their enjoyment of teaching/mentoring. They do need a reasonable wage for a professional however.

I would say this unironically.

I don't get this sentiment. We need professors, scientists, teachers, nurses, service people, social workers, etc. And I mean, maybe the people at the top are making lots of money in part due to crappy wages at the bottom? And even if all these people wrongly picked a college major that doesn't being in a UMC lifestyle-are you saying their kids should suffer the consequences and not be able to afford college?

This is why you have a lot of teachers, nurses and social workers staying at home when they have kids as they cannot afford to work with child care. I stopped working due to low income. It wasn't worth it.

Many women I know who did this ended up divorced and unemployed. I’m a teacher and I would never quit my job.

I thought any former teacher could come back to teaching with any employment gap
