With the emerging importance of CS/Engineering/Applied math in the last 10-15 years, UVA became more and more dis-favored due to UVA's relatively 'poor' STEM programs. another factor is that UVA is a good school, it is not the aim or goal of most of the TJ students - they would prefer to go to top 20 schools. |
If going to top 20 schools was the objective, then going to TJ was a mistake. |
That’s great. Please quit applying to UVA, and definitely quit whining when you don’t get in. |
This is accurate reflection of our experiences as well ! |
Once they get to college, many TJ students struggle with general education requirements outside of STEM. And with their mental health. Colleges in Virginia have learned this over time and are wary. |
I think most TJ grads are like my 2 kids, who found college relatively easy after TJ, and consequently had their choice of grad schools when they graduated. |
I don't have a TJ kid but I have never heard this. Colleges are wary? Where are you getting this from? Every TJ kid I have known have found college soooo easy. I do think that they have a more difficult time than they would at base school with college admissions because of the difficulty/competition at TJ. |
New poster in this thread. I saw the 2022 results and looks like a good 50-60 kids accepted to Top 20 schools.assuming class size if 500, that’s 10%. Isn’t that better than NoVA publics? I get that if you are not too 10% of class in TJ, the odds are better at base school. I am talking strictly college admission and not with of high school education etc. |
Why do you think they are struggling? My younger kid went to TJ where the English, foreign language and social science courses were taught to a higher level than the same courses at my other kid's base school. |
Can you please share which undergrad colleges they went in and what was the major? |
Our TJ grad takes 5 classes at a T10 college this semester and finds college very easy, much easier than TJ. To fight boredom, she has a part-time job, participates in clubs, and travels to various competitions during the school year. |
Arrogance catches up. There are similarly rigorous HSs but TJ’s rep for fizzle out is unique. Crash and burn is an exaggeration, and I doubt any school avoids then, but maybe. |
How did TJ do this year in college placements? |
Colleges (w/ possible exception for MIT, CMU CS and Berkeley STEM/CS) are actually easier for TJ grads and almost all of them end up in the top 10% of their college classes and many go on to med school, top 10 law schools or top PhD programs with very high gpas. |
We considered this for our MCPS magnet DC for the exact reasons above. But, after the pandemic, I decided I didn't like the idea for DC to be that far away. But, it was a very attractive idea. DS has very high stats. |
