Montgomery County Public Schools (MCPS)
What do you consider extremely cautious? Most people who claim extremely cautious are not. Most people would consider us extremely cautious but in all reality we aren't as our kids are still in activities and I grocery shop. c |
The MD's are the doctors seeing covid patients right now. They are seeing the spread and illness. Your Ph.D. means nothing, especially if you are not in a medical profession. What happens when all the covid cases go to the doctor/urgent care and spread it to the doctors who then cannot work? |

Heads up. The data DOES NOT YET SUPPORT the hypothesis that Omicron is milder than Delta. At this point, it is just a theory. So I know everyone is repeating it, but Omicron has barely had a few weeks to disperse and that's not enough time to confirm anything. |

Children's Hospital ER is seeing close to 50% infection rates. That's for anyone coming in (sniffles to compound fractures), not just those worried they might have COVID. Lots of these folks, especially anyone with no related symptoms who hasn't been tested out of concern for, say, exposing an elderly relative during a visit, wouldn't know that they had it, otherwise. All those positive are capable of transmission, though, vaccinated or not.
Without LOTS more compliance with the request to sign up for testing out of a sense of responsibility to the larger community, it will be WAY too late to stop overwhelming spread in a school with a switch to virtual by the time it sees 5% reported. Without LOTS better compliance with behaviors such as vaccinating, distancing, not placing onesself in group situatuons unnecessarily and masking -- wearing one in the first place, using the right kind, wearing it correctly and not removing it to, say, talk to your buddy next to you -- out of the same sense of responsibility to the community, we'll have a sharper peak with greater chance of overwhelming hospitals, killing health care workers and leaving unable to meet basic medical needs in the future. Separately, the "unrelated" in the 5% rubric is not necessarily about families. They would consider it related if they were all clustered in one or two classes, which they would then set up for virtual independently of the school's going virtual as a whole. To send the whole school home, they are looking to identify more general community spread -- all around, multiple classrooms, etc. That's if they don't see the light by the end of this week and change the rubric, or the entire approach, to match the nature of the current threat. |
It’s interesting that someone who claims to be an MD on an anonymous forum feels threatened that they have to discredit a microscopist and PhDs which is the degree held by most scientists. |
Please explain what the current rate is of Covid over the past 14 days looking at the population as a whole? Using the best stats available (published ones, not just someone sounding off on DCUM), what is the rate of people infected over the past 14 days expressed as a percentage of the population? DC numbers will be fine as that’s where you work, and I know they are worse there. Then come back and let us know if they are even a tiny bit close to 5%. And if not, explain why they are likely to be worse in schools than the population as a whole. |
The MD also doesn’t state their specialty. I would take the professional scientific opinion of a “microscopist” on the latest science around Covid before I would listen to an optometrist. |
Its wishful thinking and I certainly wish for it but I'm going to do my best not to catch it and find out if it is mild or not. |
Without mandatory testing we will never know the true rate in MCPS. The general population makes no difference. |
Many of us have said tha all along but no one cares so here we are with another surge. |
Very true. Sadly, the same people who are the least likely to heed warnings will be the first to loudly complain and threaten teachers and elected officials when schools close. (Don't talk to me about bars and restaurants - a lot are closing because of positives now, and Hogan doesn't want to issue a blanket order because he's looking at a Senator seat.) |
Relax, people. My husband is a virologist and has, in times of stress, put down other medical specialties. EXPERTS ARE STRESSED TOO. Stop expecting your medical doctors and research scientists to be perfect all the time. (Yes, DH thinks schools should close as well, but that's obvious.) |
How does your dear hubs feel about bar-t because if schools close bar-t will be open for parents like me who need to work in person. I guess somehow if I’m paying $1200 a month for the pleasure of entering the school building it makes it safe. Pound sand. I hate this county so much. I’m actually visiting family in the Chicago suburbs and NOONE thinks schools should or will close. |
You can choose not to go to a bar or restaurant. Problem solved. Many of us have not been in almost two years. |
If schools shut down you are partly to blame. If you cared about school safety you wouldn't be traveling right now. This isn't just about you. Its about the community. Either you are part of the problem or solution. You are part of the problem and want to complain about the consequences of your actions. |
