NCS going downhill?

Anonymous
I got wind of the recent college matriculation data for NCS and I am shockingly underwhelmed. Im also hearing grumbling that the head of school is under fire and in over her head. My dh really is pushing hard for our dd to go there, but I think his impression of the school is outdated.

Post the matriculation data you have here.

There were several tier three schools like Pittsburgh, Rollins.

Pitt? Gasp.

Pitt has consistently placed in the top cluster of U.S. public research universities and among the overall top 25 research universities according to the Center for Measuring University Performance,[9] is listed as one of U.S. News & World Report's top 20 public universities,[10] and has been listed among the best colleges for the quality of life of its students.[11] Pitt has also been named as a "best value" by various publications,[12][13][14] and has appeared in multiple rankings of the world's top universities.[15][16][17][18]
Pitt is among the nation's and world's most active research institutions as evidenced by its $642 million in annual research expenditures, its standing among the top five schools in the amount of National Institutes of Health research allocations, and its election as one of the 61 North American members of the Association of American Universities.[19] Pitt and its medical school are also closely affiliated with the University of Pittsburgh Medical Center, one of the nation's leading academic medical centers.[20]
Pitt is popularly recognized for its centerpiece building, the Cathedral of Learning, for its central role in developing the first polio vaccine,[21] and for fielding nationally competitive NCAA Division I athletic programs.[22]

YMMV. Just saying.

So who would choose Pitt over UVA or UMD from around here? Only if they couldn't get into the local state school. We're talking about undergrad here after all.

I don't have the matriculations facts for last year's class at NCS, but I have seen matriculation facts for all the top area schools over several years, and they all have strong years and weak years, for the classes can and do vary widely from year to year. To judge a school by one graduating class would not be reasonable.

What are the positives that lead DH to push for it?

No, NCS is just as strong a school as it has been for over 100 years. The class matriculations do vary, but on average over several years it is incredibly good. The head of the school is fantastic and she has been head for many years and is certainly not "in over her head." I"m not even sure what you mean by that or where you heard that. Everyone I know loves it and it is very challenging.

Maybe OP is trying to throw the rest of us off the NCS trail?

What do you mean by this exactly?

You realize people may have reasons for matriculating at "tier 3" schools? Maybe an athletic or other extracurricular opportunity, or perhaps a family member who is on staff (thus a reduction in tuition), or perhaps a special area of study/interest for the student?

The world should not be seen through ivy-colored glasses.

Maybe I'm wrong, but seems that NCS is not that difficult to get into these days either.

Basis for this claim?

There have been a number of years recently where fewer Beauvoir girls have chosen NCS for 4th grade, which has opened more places at that entry point. Last two years, I think an unwelcoming AD was a factor. She is gone now. The year before that, there was an unusually small number of girls in the 3rd grade class.
That said, there is an impression that the admin at NCS isn't quite as on top of some things as it could be. It is as challenging as ever academically, but there is a fair amount of discontent in the atmosphere.
