Google images of Ivanka on the apprentice and it’s really hard to find a nips ahoy. She spent the first 3 years though as an “advisor” to the president where this was a regular occurrence. Something to attract her dad’s attention and distract everyone else as to her complete lack of credentials.

She doesn’t have a job- she just tries to use her groomed looks to get people to think that she and her entire family are not opportunistic psychos who care about nothin but money and power. She is basically a prop to trump’s base, not a professional working woman. She doesn’t work- she can’t be fired and has no accountability.

Completely agree. It’s not a matter of not knowing how to dress—she did so for a reality tv show. Your late 30s is an odd time to get the frilly, flowery, flowy—yet some how sexed up dresses. I think they did some polling among evangelicals as to what would appeal.

One of the few times she actually dressed appropriately as an “advisor” to the president was the day she pulled the Bible out for her dad.

The First Lady is usually the prop, which I’m sad to say because I know that most of them do a lot of work, the international equivalent of kinship work that women perform everywhere but for which they get zero credit. Lil’ Ivana isn’t the First Lady, nor has she officially taken on the role as other substitute First Ladies have (there have been a few nieces and daughters, though it’s been a while). She’s like Alice Roosevelt if Alice Roosevelt were trying to be an official advisor but also not be one.

And so we arrive at her bonkers clothing. Look, I don’t want to get too explicit, but she’s dressing for an audience of one and what that audience wants. Dressing for the evangelicals is part of that, and if you listened to the conservative pps over in Politics early on they just could not get over Ivanka’s appearance. It really ticked some boxes for them, her total lack of style included. If you’ve ever watched New Girl, there’s an episode in which Nick is talking about what women should wear and what they should look like, and it was as crazy un-attractive as what Ivanka looks like. So that’s what she’s doing.

Meanwhile, when Melania feels like it, she makes really interesting choices. Maybe a little more kidney than any other FL, but they’re in her body now, so there they are.

I don't think Melania's choices are that great, but she spends a lot more money. It's as if there's a scrap of paper somewhere that says anytime Melania is to be seen she receives a $10K clothing allowance, and she makes sure to hit the mark, even if that means slinging a coat in April. Maybe it's in her stylist's contract, or the renegotiated prenup, it's somewhere. Ivanka's budget is more scrappy. She spends plenty, and buys some pricey things but usually not head to toe single designer. Her splurge, like the Prada skirt, will be paired with make-do items. Her dresses are often available on discount, and seem like impulse buys.
