talk to me about Jello

Anonymous
my son is crazy about the stuff. (introduced at a friend's house; his mom had the premade cups, but I don't want to buy the premade cups, I'm too cheap.) how do you get it into shapes? do you do the recipes with fruit or veggies that you can share? there a baffling array of recipes if you google and I just don't know where to start...

My daughter also loves the stuff. I hate giving it to her because I feel like I'm just giving her pure sugar.

But, mommy confession here....I LOVE JELLO!

I love it when the top gets gummy or chewy in places when it's setting up or cooling....how do I get that to happen every time?

Make it following the directions on the package.

Make shapes either by pouring it while still liquid into molds or by making it with about half the water and cutting it when set using cookie cutters.

You can add almost any fruit except pineapple, by waiting til it's starting to set and dropping into the jello.

You can buy plain Knox gelatin powder and add 100% fruit juice to it and make all natural gelatin. It is very good. I use grape and apple juice. You can cut it into bricks that are fun to play with and eat. you can also sub some of the juice for sparkling water or cider, makes them bubbly.

My mom used to make it with mango pulp and apricot Jello packs.

Ooh, I remember making the sparkling white grape jello as a teen. My mom rolled her eyes, but bought the fizzy water anyway.

Canned pineapple works, just not fresh. No kiwi either.

I love blackberry jello with bananas.

Why would you want your kids to play with their food?

I can't eat it because it's not vegetarian. Wish I could buy a vegetarian version like I could easily in the UK (in fact, most jello there was vegetarian). Anyone seen that around here?

Because I don't see the point in playing with food? I also don't let them draw on the walls or jump on the furniture. It's probably hell living here.

Thanks for the great ideas--sounds very appealing for my grandchildren!

Not the same at all. I think it's fine for kids to play with jello bricks now and then, as long as it's restricted to a specific table or area. It's also fun to spread pudding on waxed paper and let them write in it while eating. FWIW, I wouldn't let children or or grandchildren draw on the walls or jump on the furniture.
