"And what's more, many drivers don't think it's dangerous when they do it — only when others do, the survey found."

| Do as I say not as I do. |
| saw a cop on the phone in her copcar today... |
| Drives me nuts and I see it all the time. |
| And they think that because they are driving 10 miles an hour doing it that they are being safer. So selfish and stupid. |
| I guess none of you eat or drink or change the radio station or get stuff from your purse or reach back to help your kids? Just as unsafe. Anything that isn't eyes on the road, hands on ten and two, is dangerous. |
| while it is unsafe to do all the things you say 22:53 the difference is it is not against the law. In two jurisdictions in the metro area it is against the law to use your phone (speak without a hands free device) or text. It is difficult for the police to enforce and they even use their phones themselves |
OP here and I truly avoid doing any of these things, even though they're not against the law. BTW, with the new airbags the new recs are hands on nine and three

In the midst of a cross country road trip right now and I can't tell you how much of this we've seen. In EVERY state. You can predict the distraction when you see a car swerving around and you pull up to pass (giving as much room as possible) and look over to see driver texting.
Talking is bad enough, but texting is really, really dangerous. I put my phone in my purse on the floor so I'm not even tempted to glance at an email or text while driving. The worst are the people who talk about how they never do it when their kids are in the car. Fuck that - my kids are on the road with you, and they're just as precious as your own children. |

No, actually, texting is more dangerous. All of those things are distractions, but not like texting. Texting requires sustained attention being paid to the phone and not the road. Texting while driving is reckless and if you hit someone while you are doing it, they can easily prove that you were texting. Have fun in jail. Also have fun losing everything you own. |
Actually, hands at 8 and 4. See page 5: http://www.doe.virginia.gov/instruction/driver_education/parent_teen_driving_guide.pdf Hand position Placing the left hand at the 8 o’clock position, and the right hand at the 4 o’clock position improves the driver’s stability by lowering the body’s center of gravity, and reduces unintended and excessive steering wheel movement which is a primary cause of young driver fatalities. This more natural seating position also helps the driver to keep both hands on the wheel and reduces back pain often associated with trip driving. |
why don't you take a bus if you want to live out in the boonies? |
| They won't stop because they are too f&*$ing arrogant. They think that whatever they have to text or talk about is more important than common courtesy, safety, or human lives. What really pisses me off are the people driving fancy, expensive cars and talking on a hand held cell -- if you can afford that car you can afford some form of bluetooth! |
Money can't buy brains. I doubt they'd even know how to set up the bluetooth on their Audis. I wish moving at more than 10 MPH disabled texting on your phone. |
