| Today I had the whole day to myself and was running around trying to get a ton of errands/shopping done. I was in the G'town Safeway and was starting to get "hangry" (hungry/angry) so I got a slice of pizza from their prepared food area. Combo with a fountain coke $2.99. It was gross. Hours later, I finished up toy shopping at Sullivan's and my stomach was growling again so I said to myself, "Well, McD's is right down the street and I haven't been there in ages. I'll get a Fishmac." (I used to love those). Well, that meal was gross too. Greasy fries, I guess the sandwich was palatable, mediocre hot chocolate. Totally unsatisfying food due to my bad choices. But my question is, what have I done to myself? I'm not a food snob or vegetarian, and am middle income, but frankly I do most of my food shopping at Whole Foods and prepare most meals at home. But I can't take pleasure in cheap food anymore? At the same time I wonder how people can eat like this regularly... are they satisfied? I'm eating an apple right now and it is good. I'm vacillating between feeling good that I like high quality food and being disgusted with myself at how snobbish and picky I'm being. Thoughts? |
| You're snobbish. But that's not the response you were looking for here. Give it a minute. The smug mommies will respond shortly. |
I don't think you are snobbish. I stopped eating fast food for a long time and when I finally had some again it did not taste good. I think your body is just used to different kinds of food now.
|
| I think it's a good thing that you've been so eating well and doing it consistently so that so your tastes have changed. You'll live longer that way and you'll feel better. It's not a terrible fate to not enjoy cheap food anymore, especially when so many people are struggling to eat better but they still feel addicted to the high-fat, high-sugar stuff. But neither is it anything to be a snob about. Don't be a snob. Just be grateful. |
Try some shiny beef from Arby's. My personal fav
|
|
OP, do you eat Chinese or Thai take out?
IMO, that's also fast food, full of fat, sugar and salt. |
I go through periods where I find fast food gross. And then I get over it. But some things (like sbarro pizza) I really just can't eat any more. And I'm careful of McDonalds...I love the taste, but my stomach sometimes doesn't appreciate it as much as my mouth.

I would be completely dismayed if a bacon egg & cheese biscuit from McD was no longer the best part of the morning. Well, of three mornings a year, on average.
But... Taco Bell. I used to gorge myself on Taco Bell til I literally couldn't eat another bite. Now? Meh. And sometimes Ew. It's sad. It's like the simple pleasures are fading away as we age. I thought we were supposed to be MORE appreciative of these little things in our wise old age! What's left, the laughter of children? It's sad, I tell you. Just sad. |

The Safeway pizza I'm sure was not that good to start with.
Fishmac? If you don't know it's a Filet-O'Fish I seriously question whether you ever really did appreciate fast food at all. Actually, I've decided that all I like at McD's is the fries, but they have to be fresh, and some of the breakfast items. Next time go to Chick Fil-A, get the waffle fries. |
| Personally I don't think it's a snob thing. I think the quality of food in those places has really gone down from when we were kids. I mean, it was never high to begin with, but the fillers and added flavors and stuff that has been added through the years... gah. It used to be that a regular cheeseburger at McD's had onions and lettuce and actually tasted like a burger. That went away years ago. Now even their "good" burgers no longer taste like actual meat and every time I eat there I feel sick after. There's nothing snobby about not wanting to eat bad tasting "food" that makes you feel sick. |
| Stopped at Chipotle yesterday for a burrito and coke. I used to love Chipotle! Apparently, not any more. |
| There's good cheap food and bad cheap food. Chipotle and Baja Fresh come to mind as good cheap food. I used to love Egg McMuffins until I ate one three years ago and felt horrible afterwards. Haven't eaten one since. And I am by no means a health nut. |
| I think as we get older, our stomachs change. Don't worry op, you are just getting "cranky old person" stomach. Remember how your grandparents ate bran muffins with a castor oil shooter for breakfast? |
agree. as i have gotten older, my digestive system has become cantankerous. eating fast food just doesn't sit well, literally, in my stomach. |
| In New England they have the McLobster. It is only occasional like the McRib. So ridiculously good. |
