Teacher salary at top private schools

Anonymous
These schools that charge over $30K - what do they pay the teachers? My understanding is that, in general, teachers at private schools get paid far less than teachers at public schools. I was just wondering if that held true for the elite private schools.

Yes. Salaries aren't even close to local districts, and even lower when you consider benefits.

Really? Even at the top-tier? So a DCPS teacher makes more than a Sidwell teacher across the board?

yes...they do it for the love of teaching, publics pay way more, and some have a good retirement package.

Public school has significant 'step' increases each year that really rack up over time. Public also credits you 'steps' for any additional degrees etc. Public school teachers near retirement are often around 100K. I don't personally think the retirement packages are super impressive in public though.

Public schools usually pay much better, but at some private schools you have bright and creative teachers who are not licensed and could not teach in public schools if they wanted too without certain classes even though they are talented. Also, have heard men get paid more then women some places and sometimes science and math teachers do better, but don't know if that is true.

I wanted talented teachers who are also certified. It is not impossible to get both all rolled up into one.

In DC the BIG added benefit of teaching in a private school is that , in most cases, your kids can go there for free or nearly free ( $ 3K of the 30K fee). So, if you live in ward 1 because your teacher salary does not allow you to buy a home in Horace Mann, Janey or Murch neighborhood, but have three kids it is a great Benefit if they can all go to your private school for free.

Not so fast. I taught at a school where there was ZERO remission for teacher's children. Remission varies at most schools, but hardly any give a full ride or nearly a full ride.

Your kids can not go to the schools for free. I think STA is the only Big school with that benefit. I know NCS is zero, maret is zero and Sidwell is moving towards zero.

According to NAIS ...

Teacher Salaries

Salaries for teachers at independent schools vary dramatically, depending on years of experience, school type (day/boarding, coed/single-sex, elementary/secondary), school size, and region. NAIS data compiled for the 2007-08 school year show that the median salary for all teachers at independent schools was $46,914. For beginning teachers, the median salary was $32,935, and the median for the highest paid teachers was $68,933. Factors that influence salaries for independent school teachers include: total years of teaching experience, the number of years employed at the current school, merit and performance, teaching load, and degrees and credits.

Why Teachers Choose Independent Schools

Researchers at the Klingenstein Center at Teachers College, Columbia University, identified four factors that draw teachers to independent schools: the autonomy and empowerment associated with independent schools, the unique atmosphere of an independent school, the quality of students, and the school facilities. Teachers value their curricular freedom; small class size; and close-knit relationships with students, faculty, and administrators.

if you go on goldstar you can see what the highest paid people at these private schools that are non-profits do. they have to disclose some of that information - its a nice way to waste a rainy afternoon
