Say, a 5th Grade teacher teaching 15 boys, or a 7th grade math teacher. What would they earn in their first year? How about their tenth year? Do private school high school teachers earn more? Do public school teachers earn more (albeit they teach larger classes)? What sort of benefits typically go with that? Health care? Mortgage assistance? Do teachers get pretty much the same vacations as their students? |
I am also looking into teaching at a DC private school What is the salary for a primary grade teacher? What about as a primary associate teacher? What does that mean? A school I am looking at teaching has openings for associate teachers. Just wasn't sure what that was and what it pays. |
Public school teachers earn more. The local salaries vary, but a first year teacher may not even make 40,000. I don't know anything about assistant teachers. Compare that with the recent thread in which it was asked how people were affording private school tuition.... and the kind of salaries people named and were "struggling" to pay tuition. Considering what a well-qualified teacher puts into getting the education and experience, it isn't much. |
Teachers do get "pretty much the same vacations as their students." Unless they are married to lawyers (often the case for those who can actually afford to teach in an independent school) or have a trust fund (rare) they are usually working a good chunk of that time to make ends meet. |
They are only interested in young recent college graduates for the associate teacher position at Beauvoir. If you are over 30, or have children, your application will not be seriously considered. |
Former private school teacher here. (I guess PP's assumed you were looking at/asking about assistant teaching) In a private school, if you have a BA in a subject area (ex-English, Science, Math...) and have a strong academic record, you can possibly become a head teacher. (Varies from school to school) Salary also depends on degree level (MA, PhD, or just BA) and whether or not you've completed a accredited teacher's program. I received an MA in Teaching, started out at a large private D.C. school, made equivalent to a first or second yr public school teacher--without the stress, teach-to-the-test, no freedom with curriculum, etc....that unfortunately public school teacher must endure. |
Do private school teachers get pensions? Actually, do public school teachers still get pensions? Or is everyone 401K'ed? |
Private school teachers earn up to the $75K range for those with many (20+) years of experience. The average is somewhere in the $40-50K range. All local private schools offer a retirement plan of some kind I assume, though the plan at most (all?) is not a pension where the school pays the whole thing but is a 401K-type plan where you only get a school match only if you contribute too. Some schools have other perks too - - onsite childcare, housing/mortgage assistance, for example. If you're really "hot," you may be able to get a signing bonus too. |
i have an m.a and my starting salary was in the upper 40's. my public school friends made 4-6 more sometimes but i made up for it in perks. great class parents, involved parents, great support from administrators and freedom to teach. highly reccommend it. |
What about if you have a degree and certification in elementary educ and early childhood education but not much teaching experience other than student teaching would you still start of as an assiciate teacher or as a lead teacher. |
It really does depend upon the private school. I teach at a private school and am a head teacher- but I only have my ba- with 8 years of teaching experience. Some schools will hire you with little teaching experience as long as you have the right credentials. Other schools don't put as much weight on degrees and will take a chance on someone who comes highly recommended. Good luck if you're looking for a job right now though- given the economy, not many teaching positions are open in this area. People are not willing to give up their position right now. |
This won't tell you how the average teacher at a school does but you can find salary information at http://www.guidestar.org/. Guidestar has the 990s from non-profit organizations which include the salaries of the highest paid 3 (I think or maybe 5) employees. I check it out when I'm applying to jobs at non-profits and one day I looked for dd's school and found it there. |
Beauvoir has had 8 open positions for next school year since February. I beleive they still have fill at least 4 more. The jobs are there. http://www.aimsmd.org/ |
Interesting. |
why do the private schools pay the teachers so little? |
