I am the first shark diver and so perhaps overly reckless (lol), but I can completely see the value in billionaires funding and participating in missions and exploration. Explorers almost always have had private funding or sponsors, from King Tut to Everest. These things are expensive and usually the sponsor wants to come along for at least part of the ride.
The technology used in underwater exploration can also be used by our military, and perhaps in the future in underwater civilizations. It makes more sense than building on Mars to me. Also, I am sure the Coast Guard had very limited hope but we all still benefited from the experience they gained. Rescue forces need real life experience, and this is better experience than a drill would be. I don’t even think they deployed any divers. Scanning the ocean isn’t very dangerous in and of itself, or even all that different from an average day. |
| As this whole thing was unfolding I couldn’t help thinking how insane it would have been if Bezos had blown up Captain Kirk on his flight into near space. Thank goodness Bezos has good people making and testing his rockets! |

*serves OceanGate with a bill of lading and letters of marque and reprisal* |

As the US Coast Guard leads the investigation after deploying lots of resources already the American taxpayers will foot the bill for this unnecessary tragedy thanks to Stockton Rush and Ocean Gate's unprofessional, unscientific, greedy and careless disregard for human life after being repeatedly warned by experts to stop selling tourist trips in this vessel several years ago. There will be lawsuits from families of billionaires who should have been smart enough to investigate this misadventure thoroughly before signing on. I find the whole thing disgusting in so many ways. The 19 yr old was basically murdered by his own father's negligence and Stockton Rush's greed and arrogance. The rest should have known better.

According to one of the 19 yr old boy’s relatives, he was very hesitant about going on that expedition. This raises some questions about his father. There was an article about a phone conversation a journalist had with the father and son’s relative. |
| At least their deaths were quick and painless. Small mercy 😔 |
Hold on, aren’t letters of marque for piracy? |
It would be nice if they had a black box on the vehicle, but that's unlikely. Even if they had one, you are asking a lot of it to survive that implosion. |
Lol @ anyone associated with this operation even thinking about installing a black box. They couldn’t even be bothered to attach a $50 ERP beacon which would have let the coast guard and support ship to know its actual location. Ride or die, billionaires. We either seein’ the Titanic or instantly vaporizing. |
According to James Cameron, there was a self-contained transponder aboard the craft. |
He was also on that flight. |
| This is obviously very sad on a human level, and I feel for their families. But I don’t think it’s inappropriate at all for people to comment on the absurdity of billionaires spending $250k and signing up to be MISSION SPECIALISTS only to vaporize themselves in experimental carbon fiber tubes 10,000 feet under the ocean. |
Sister, that's what we ALL are saying |
| How is it known they were attempting to release ballast (rise to the surface or slow descent) before the implosion? Is that what they were communicating with the support ship about before they went offline? |
