| New family in upper NW here. Are cash gifts the norm? If not, what is the norm? If so, how much? |
the class might give gifts, but most families I know give cards only. |
| At Mann the families all pitch in and buy the teacher a new car (Volvo S60). |
| ok, pp, that just made me laugh out loud. And I'm a grump. Well done. |
| Me too! But then I worried she wasn't joking! |
| Not part of the Elite JKLMM crowd but parent at eaton and we sent an email said contribute if you want to, collected the funds are are getting a gift card. |
Our preferred approach is for class to buy the teacher(s) a gift (perhaps a small gift along with a gift card). Parent donations of $10 or $20 are suggested, but completely optional. Card says "from the class" with no names. |
| The room parents collect $$ for gifts, usually $10-20 from each family per teacher. |

Yu Ying families chip in for cash gifts to the teachers. In China (Asia, really) it's traditional and acceptable to give cash, particularly new bills, so it works. I'm not sure you could pull it off anywhere else, though.
From a WASPy background, it may (definitely will) feel tacky at first, but once you get past the first class gift, a competitive instinct kicks in. Who wants to be the least generous class, right? |
precisely. It might be funny when the first child farts in church, because it's unexpected and shocking. But when the other children start in, well, totally not funny at all. Exponentially less funny each subsequent time. |
| Mundo Verde is collecting cash gifts and evenly distributing to all teachers/staff in the form of gift cards. Since they are small, and since there are two sets of teachers/aides, this feels right to me this year. |
| Janney parent here. Room parents collect cash and give teacher a gift care. This year there is also a "secret snowflake" thing where each family "adopts" a staff member and gets them little gifts. It totally annoying but we participated anyway. |
I thought this was a great idea as well, especially given that each child has so many teachers. The suggested donation was fairly nominal, but I personally think that parents that can afford to should give a higher amount as the teachers work very hard and are paid very little. Moreover, it is unrealistic to believe that everyone will give. |
