| I keep hearing about this IB program. Kids in my neighborhood were able to avoid the local "ghetto high school" in my district by doing the IB program at another high school. that is what the kids call the local high school -- ghetto -- those are NOT my words. use repeating what the kids say.... What is this IB program and how does it work? Is it only for middle school or is it also for high school? How does one apply and is it difficult to get into it? |

Its a program where kids are taught manners and appropriate communication skills.
You should try it. |

international baccalaureate. internationally recognized program for 11th and 12th graders. curriculum and exams set by an international group. recognized as pretty rigorous, alot of writing, projects, etc. schools/teachers have to be certified to teach it.
lots of info on line about it. |
Regular school program don't teach it? |
| It's a socialist plot to deprive us of our vital juices. |

FCPS put it into about 8 schools and then bought more IB curriculum for some elementary and middle schools.
It pays for curriculum, training, test or exam fees, postage, etc. Yes FCPS has curriculum people in instructional services and AP is at the high performing high schools. Very few students get it or are in the IB diploma track. The diploma means zilch since it is issued long after the college admissions process is over. IB schools even have an extra staff person to funnel the paperwork and help the students deal with the program. It went in to schools to make the school more attractive to those who would otherwise pupil place out . Few pupil place into South Lakes or other schools for the program from places like Madison, Langley, Mclean. |
| Actually I think there are quite a few who pupil place into Marshall from Madison. |
|
It varies from school to school.
There is roughly an even exchange between Marshall and Madison (as many students living in the Madison district place into Marshall for the IB program as students living in the Marshall district place into Madison for AP courses). Overall, Marshall usually is a net recipient of students placing into the school for for the IB program, since it is surrounded by AP schools (Langley, McLean, Madison and Falls Church), a lot of foreign families live in eastern Fairfax, and some families just look for ways to get their kids out of Falls Church. This year FCPS is reporting 46 more in-placements than out-placements at Marshall. Conversely, 26 more kids transferred out of Langley this year than into the school. Among the other IB schools in Fairfax, it varies. Robinson, Stuart and Edison typically get more in-placements than out-placements, and Annandale, Lee, South Lakes and Mount Vernon usually have more out-placements than in-placements. |

| Do kids also pupil place in or out for the IB middle years program into and out of middle schools? |
| The information for Annandale is wrong. According to FCPS, Annandale has 10 in-placements and 24 out-placements this year. |
If it's a program for 11th and 12th graders, do the kids just transfer to the IB school for 11th and 12th grades, or for the entire high school years? |
I read on this forum somewhere (it may have been the college forum) that it is highly respected by colleges for admission purposes, more so than AP. Although I also heard that for whatever reason, AP courses result in more college credits? Does anyone know? |
