What are common or uncommon stereotypes or misconceptions associated with your job/career?
I am a professional researcher. Apparently this is something interns do. (Can you tell this perception irks me a bit?)
I work in TV. People think it's cool. It's not.
Social Worker. People think I can take their kids away (I can't) and I must be crunchy/granola/nice (I am not.)
I work for the Government. Apparently I'm lazy and stupid despite the success of my programs and the hours I work. And before someone comments on my being on DCUM during the work day, I'm on my 30 min lunch break eating at my desk.
I'm in sales. People tell me I must be good at what I do because I'm "such a people person!". They also think I have this wonderful high-flying on-the-road lifestyle wining and dining clients. The truth is I'm often spending nights at the Sheraton out by the hotel because my hotel limit hasn't been changed in the 5 year I've done this job, ordering room service and then paying for half of it out of pocket because my per diem also has not been adjusted possibly ever. I'm exhausted. But, the money IS good!
I am a photographer. I am also a work at home Mom. Most people think that I picked up photography as a way to do something to pass my time. However, I went to school for photography, used to have a darkroom in my house and spent many years studying the trade from a top professional. If I was a male photographer, it would be a totally different assumption.
I'm a lawyer. People think I'm anal, OCD and have difficulty relaxing. Oh wait........
Nanny - uneducated and unambitious
I'm a government researcher - the worst of both worlds. I'm also on break.
Social Worker here too. People think I can do my job because I'm a sweet person. Er, I'm a qualified professional, y'all. |
Lawyer. People think I make a shit ton of $. Nope.
PP SW here - amen. There is skill to our job. |
Yup. Alongside, because I'm ESL people assume I'm here illegally. |
doctor - ppl think i'm RICH.
