So my SIL probably wanted us out of her kitchen too, here is how it went.
(this is a TMI rant) We were told to get there at 5. So we got there at 5:15 with our 2.5 yo and our 5 yo. They served us apps left over from a party from last weekend. (we brought some that they had requested but when we got there they said they forgot they had a bunch leftover-inlcuding the dip that sat out for hours last weekend, and had been dipped into.) I know eating with other families isn't always easy, but this was tough. Other SIL shows up with the turkey and stuffing and gravy that she always insists on cooking. We then wait 2 more hours for the nieces, they ate at their in-laws, so why we had to wait for them is beyond me. Finally, at 7:30 we eat, I swear to you I CANNOT eat the turkey, stuffing, or gravy. The turkey SIL cooked last year was pink inside, she reheated it and swore it was fine. for some reason, now I cant bring myself to eat it because I don't ever think its cooked correctly. The stuffing was green, as was the gravy. SIL keeps going on and on about how she chopped up all the giblets and put them in there. I don't know what giblets are, but they made the stuffing green so I am NOT eating that! Then I'm all freaked out about food handling, MIL brought potato salad, not mashed potatoes (good thing considering the gravy is green), and it sits out for the 2.5 hours before we ate, plus the hour drive from her house. So 3.5 hours and there is a ton of mayo, I can't bring myself to eat that either. I really did like the apple pie I brought, thank you Mrs Smith for giving me and my kids something to eat safely on thanksgiving. I love my in-laws, they are very sweet, but I was up all night with explosive diarrhea! And now I don't know if it's from the old apps, the pink turkey, the green gravy, or if it's psychosomatic Oh well, happy thanksgiving

Psychosomatic, heavy emphasis on the "psycho".
|
| Food poisoning bad. No weight gain good? |
| Sounds like you have top many food issues to eat at relatives. When you can't eat this years turkey, because of last year's turkey, you are the one with the problem. |
| Op here, I know it's crazy, it was last years turkey. But she has lots of cats, and use dips her fingers in the food while cooking etc. I know it's my own issues but still! The gravy and stuffing was green for christ's sake! that's not my issues, that gross! |
| Giblets are the neck, gizzard, heart and liver. The stuffing was green because of sage and parsley, which would also turn the gravy green. Or maybe they stuck food coloring in it to scare you.... |
| My stuffing is green, people say it's good. If you dont even know what giblets are...you shouldn't talk. |
OP, I don't think you can have psychosomatic diarrhea. Sounds like your stomach objected to dinner. But as a PP pointed out, at least you don't have Thanksgiving weight to lose, which for many of us is a plus.

Using the "giblets" (especially the neck) is common for making chicken broth. But if they were actually chopped up and added to the stuffing, that would be pretty nasty.
Next time why don't you step in and ask to help? Offer to put things away, check on food, etc. That may help you feel less paranoid about the food quality and you could put food away if you feel it is sitting out too long. |
|
First off, I have to say that eating mayo that's been sitting out won't make you sick. In the old days when people made homemade mayo...yes, but nowadays with preservatives and what not, you don't technically even need to refrigerated it.
Ok, now with that said, I am with you. If someone's cooking makes me sick even once, I am forever leery! Next year, have T-day at your house or order from the grocery store. |
|
The only sane rant here is waiting so long to eat when you have small children. Everything else is an eye-roller.
Why don't YOU do Thanksgiving, OP. |
| I'm with the OP. I am fanatical about food handling. My in-laws are old school, they will happily offer you some thing that's been sitting on the cold stove for hours, or something that's been sitting on the party table since goodness knows when. My dh never gets sick, and accuses me of being a snob when I won't eat the food or give it to our kids. |
|
OP, I'm right there with you. Had dinner with friends and...had a hard time eating. one friend kept blowing her nose during the day, not washing before going back to the food. One told me to check the temperature of the mashed potatoes by sticking my finger in them. The turkey was pink in some spots.
....maybe I'll just take over cooking from now on. |
| My stuffing had green onions and parsley, and two people said it was the best stuffing they had ever had. I made my gravy with broth made from boiling the giblets, although I didn't put parsely in it. These are all completely standard recipes. OP, it seems like you need to get out more, and try different (read: very conventional) things. |
