s/o Why no vitriol for actors, pro athletes, and CEOs?

Why does everyone love hate lawyers? Why aren't folks in the "I am bitter toward the rich" post mention celebrities and CEOs? It's effed-up to me that we idolize these random celebrities (who WE make rich by seeing their movies, getting tickets to their games, and buying their products), yet castigate our neighbor lawyers (most of whom don't make anywhere near the money of those aforementioned)? I'm not a lawyer, but friend to many.

"virtriol" and "castigate?" Seriously?

Thanks, OP -- I've been wondering the same thing. I'd be a lot more supportive of an Occupy Hollywood or NFL/MLB/NBA (especially with the negotiations going on right now!) movement. The fact that som many people are now rich and famous for nothing (Kate Goslin, anyone) amkes me ill.

I suspect you don't see that hatred here because they don't live next door, to be honest.

Envy because they make so much money and are not worth one-tenth of their salary.

CEOs, actors and pro athletes are worth their salaries?

I think it is because most people recognize that no matter how hard they worked they could never have become an actor or a pro-athelete. However, if they would have studied harder or been more motivated they could have become the rich lawyer down the street.

There are too many people who think they are worth more than they are. If reality did actually slap them in the face, they would be absolutely clueless.

Are you kidding? CEOs and high level business execs get bashed ALL THE TIME on this forum. While some awful high level business execs have been ridiculously compensated for their poor decisions, in general I think CEOs and these folks should be making a hell of a lot more than me. I'm not responsible for thousands of people's jobs, and no one is depending on my leadership and talents to lead a company. Everyone was quick to blame CEOs of Enron for the decisions that wiped out thousands of hard-working people's retirement (and rightly so) but when CEOs succeed in advancing a company and employing people it's rarely them that are singled out.

I have no personal stake in this, since DH and I are NOT high level execs and we both make under 6 figures, but it is something I find strange.

Lawyers just get talked about so much because there are so many lawyers in this area, so many posters who are lawyers asking questions about biglaw etc.

I have lots of vitriol towards actors and pro-athletes. And, some of those horribly untalented musicians that seem to pop-up. And, CEOs who pay their workers crap while they live high on the hog. And, some politicians.

ITA. Plus, you don't become a CEO overnight, you climb the proverbial ladder, sacrificing a lot in the process, and the higher you get, the more responsibility you have. It's a lot of pressure, believe it or not, and not everyone is suited for it.

Now, actors - that's a totally different issue altogether. They definitely are not worth the money they are paid. Look at Angelina Jolie, she can't act her way out of a paper bag. When she was younger, she got away with essentially playing herself, a drugged-out psycho, but once she started aging and tried different roles it became clear how talentless she is. But still, she makes tons of money just on her name alone.

ugh. I hate lawyers. They cause a lot more problems to themselves and to this country than baseball players.

I agree with PP, CEO's get bashed all the time. The thing about Hollywood is it's not a monolith. Occupy Meryl Streep? I don't think so. That said, I could definitely Occupy Reality TV.

Because everyone in the District is a lawyer? I don't think CEOs get a break here. Actors and pro-atheletes are unknown remote figures so they don't actually count as human to most.

I am indifferent to lawyers. MBAs are another story...

Celebrities and athletes are our fault. If people didn't go to sports events and go to movies and watch TMZ and watch reality shows then they wouldn't get paid so much. But enough people do all of those things so it justifies the salaries.
