how does one apply for dc daycare vouchers?

DC Vouchers - 202-727-0284. They are income dependent.

DC did away with child care vouchers that were automatically granted (did not matter your income) to children with special needs in October 2009. Now they consider your income when issuing a voucher. Top income brackets for a childcare voucher are: $36425 for a family of 2, 45775 for a family of 3 and 55125 for a family of 4. OSSE/Office of Early Childhood Education administers the voucher program

We qualified for the voucher back in 2008 and frankly it was useless. We called all the Daycare Centers that accepted the voucher and they had year long waitlists. My son's needs at that time would have been too severe anyway for someone without extensive knowledge of autism, so it was pointless for us. I think it is a good thing to make it income related. I have been told that the numbers PP mention do take in consideration costs such as therapies etc. related to your child's illness so if your income is higher than that you may still qualify.

I am trying to find a daycare for my 7 month old daughter and my only means of payment
until i find work will be a voucher. My standards for a daycare should not be lowered just because
I use government help as funding. As a new mother I am hesitant about putting my daughter in
daycare. I have to work/school and do not want to put my child in a daycare that is only doing it
for money or one that is right beside a liquor store. With that said i just wanted to ask mom what
daycare would they recommend.
Thank you

I heard that Model Cities in Trinidad is opening again in the fall. It was a wonderful daycare that was screwed over (and closed down) by Catholic Charities and to a lesser degree by Center City PCS. They used to take kids who used vouchers. It is not in a great neighborhood, but the care is the best anywhere and the director is great. I know one family who had an autistic son there (actually two families but one left to go overseas before he was diagnosed) and there were a bunch of families where the parents were deaf. I felt that the staff did very well with these families.

Just because you use a voucher to pay for daycare, doesn't mean you have to lower you standards. My infant daughter goes to a great center downtown, and no its not beside a liquor store. Please stop being ignorant

Lt. Joseph P. Kennedy Institute in NE is a great Day Care run by Catholic Charities and accepts vouchers. They specialize in special needs but many of the kids including my 2 year old are not. My now 9 year old also went there as a baby & it was great to come back 7 years later & the same staff was there, many who've been at the center 20+ years!! They just received one of the largest grants from the Obama Administration to the city of DC to open a Head Start Program, which is now open.
