Talk to me about Takoma EC in DC

Anonymous
DD will be 3 next fall, so we're starting to think about pre-k. We are thinking about the charters we like and have found plenty of info about those. Our neighborhood school is Takoma EC. We've attended an info session and really like the principal's energy. I've seen the scores. Any additional feedback about the school from current parents? I'm especially interested in the pre-k, k, but would like to hear general info too. TIA.

I've heard that it is the next transitioning school, and it will one day highly sought after. The principal seems fabulous, and I was mighty impressed with her quick response after their fire. She had great information up on the school website almost immediately, and by all accounts the communication with the parents was impressive.

From whom? It's a campus that goes all the way to 8th because it was under-enrolled going to 5th.

Also, Brent says it's the next transitioning school. So does Ross. So does Maury. So does....

OP here again- any current parents have any thoughts?

Not a current parent, but live in bounds.

The school has been preK to 8 for the 10 years that I have lived in Takoma DC.

The current principal came 3 or 4 years ago, and there has been a lot more interest from the inbounds community. But primarily in the preS/ PreK grade levels. Looking at the DC Cas scores, the tested population is ~75% AA, 25% hispanic, no white kids in those levels. It is a Title 1 school, majority FARMS.

If I had a PreS student now, I would strongly consider this school. I would probably also apply out every year, and see if I could get my child into a nearby charter (e.g., LAMB, Cap City coming to Ward 4, YY not that far, EL Haynes possibly tho I might prefer Haynes to TEC).

I have not seen neighborhood interest in the upper primary / middle school grades. I have read DCUM for a couple years and never seen a post from a parent of a child in these grades.

15:31 correction, I might prefer TEC to Haynes, the year round wouldn't work for my family, not convinced Haynes would be better in the mid elementary / middle school years.

Also, my kids have attended OOB & charter.

Does anyone know the % of IB vs. OOB? Also, what high schools do most students go to after 8th grade?

Look up their profile on the DCPS site and you'll find out this kind of info.

About 50/50 in/out bounds

The principal told me 8th graders are admittted to top high schools -- Walls, Banneker, & Ellington were mentioned by her. No numbers, we only had a brief conversation.

takomaedcenter@yahoogroups.com

There is a yahoo groups for parents of current and potential students. It is not a very busy list serve, but about once a month an event related to the school is announced. Considering joining and you'll keep in touch but not burst your inbox.

Thanks 9:30. I've sent in a request to join.

In one sense Brent has transitioned. It made AYP last year - the only DCPS elementary east of the park.

My daughter is turning three next summer and we are considering starting her in PreK there. I went to a community meeting, met the principal, some parents and volunteers and was very impressed.

over the summer I saw crews working feverishly on what appeared to be expanded modular classrooms (trailers?) behind what I appear to be Takoma EC...along Sherman Ave. Any current parents of students who can tell us what these areas are used for and what grades? Thanks!

PP- I think you are referring to Takoma Elementary in Maryland.
