APS School Board Caucus - Voting Underway

Why are people doing crazy stuff over this? Why on earth would you LIE about another school board candidate? What is wrong with these people?

I just read the exchange, and it does not come across even remotely as "admitted that she lied". Wow. Way to churn up the rumor mill. It sounds like person a and person b had a conversation. Person a walked away and reported their version to AEM, characterizing it in one way. Person b showed up and clarified what they said/thought they were conveying/intended to convey.

Man. Arlington is impossible.

Umm, all the middle schools in Arlington are the same -- its not like elementary or high school where there are any perceived or actual differences in educational quality.
So I'm not really sure how the former PRESIDENT OF THE MCKINLEY PTA (in my mind McKinley is the epitome of a North Arlington school) would somehow be considered better than someone who had the means to send her kid to a private school but chose to send them to Drew. Dislike the candidates for whatever the heck you want, but sending your kids to Drew is very very different from sending your kids to Kenmore. Miranda deserves credit for that.

All Arlington middle schools are the same. Hahahaha. Have you had a middle schooler in Arlington?! Not true.

That’s some alternative fact! Just search what NA jerks say about Kenmore on here. Hint: gang activity, not academic, etc. It’s not true, but the demographics of Kenmore are most certainly different than Williamsburg and Swanson, and that’s exactly what people mean when they hint about “good” schools. Not that the curriculum is different. But even with curriculum, there are differences. For instance, there’s only one language option for 6th graders at KMS, but it has come to my attention that is not the case at SMS. Not the end of the world, but there sure are differences. GMAFB

I saw that exchange, and we don't really know what the volunteer said. Based on Kadera's RTS campaign info, she is open to flex scheduling in the fall. Kadera would prefer a regular schedule, but she would be open to other options. Turner has said she only supports a regular schedule. So I think that is a difference between the campaigns. Depending on what the volunteer actually said, hopefully the information that was conveyed was true. But I'm not going to immediately jump to thinking that the volunteer was lying.

The volunteer responded and admitted that she hadn't presented the information fully.

No she didn't! I just read the whole thread again and the difference is exactly what I said about. Mary is open to shifts, Miranda is not. That's a true statement. Again, I have no idea what the volunteer actually said.

But, for many people (and I include myself here) I want no part of any more hybrid/shift schedule. Knowing that Mary is open to that does matter to part of the electorate. Likewise, many people feel the opposite. They think APS has been approximately cautious. This is a real difference between the candidates.

She has done so many "coffee with the candidate" events during this campaign (outdoors, with masks) so people can ask her questions directly and hear her views. She has done so even though she knows not everyone is a supporter, and that she could be opening herself up to some pretty unpleasant encounters (I personally witnessed her handle one with a lot of grace, kindness and empathy). One of my biggest issues with the school board for a while has been how difficult it seems to be to interact with them directly. The rotation of open office hours mean there are very limited opportunities to talk to a specific board member directly, and they tend to be unresponsive to emails. I am hopeful that Turner would bring a new spirit of openness and accessibility to the board.

Also, she and I overlapped at law school, and I remember she being really smart and sharp. I think she would bring strong critical thinking skills to the board.

I don’t think this is true. I have talked to Tania Talento while grocery shopping, and Dave Priddy while attending kids’ sporting events (basketball, soccer, and baseball). It’s not like they are effete members of an aristocracy, but it’s been a farking Pandemic! Also, have interacted with SB members at our PTA meetings, and other committees I volunteer on. Maybe it’s you who isn’t accessible.

Man. Arlington is impossible.

She was totally busted.
"MK is proposing hybrid but MT wants full-time"

Even in her clarification she pushed the false narrative that MT is the only candidate who wants kids back 5 days.
"I think the crux of the issue is one’s opinion on distancing. It looks like this shift schedule is her plan if 3 feet of distance cannot be maintained. I don’t know if her view has changed since Duran said that is likely not possible given the level of interest in in-person instruction. If not, then it’s hardly a contingency plan and more like her primary plan."

MK's actual position about the fall:
"APS will offer a full-time, in-person school option next school year. We need to plan and budget for it now."

Her whole point (even back with the shifts) was about planning in advance and coming up with solutions:
"Please note that this was originally published in early April, before Dr. Duran announced that in-person instruction in August would likely not factor in any social distancing measures even if the March 19 CDC guidance is still in effect. I believe APS could have developed a plan that incorporated social distancing had it begun its planning and budgeting work earlier this spring--exactly the point I was making in the piece below."

THIS! Then the APEs get all butt hurt when they get called out and try to shame the poster and additional commenter for sharing their negative experiences with Miranda's supporters. The gaslighting is ridiculous.

How is that a misrepresentation? She put out a communication piece explaining how shifts might work! And her campaign lauded it as "look at Mary, being forward-thinking." Mary's future universes include a possibility where APS runs in shifts. Miranda's does not. That's not a misrepresentation.

Saying her kids are at a school in south Arlington does not paint an accurate picture. Her kids were very much in north Arlington elementary schools and now in Kenmore MS - a school literally on the south side of Route 50 - and are likely to attend their districted north Arlington high school.

As a parent whose children are solidly in south Arlington schools from a high poverty ES to a high poverty MS to Wakefield, I don't think this is what most people conjure up in their minds when they hear someone from north Arlington sent their kids to Kenmore. They are still very much north Arlington folks.

Wholeheartedly agree! - except on the point that all middle schools are the same. Hamm and Williamsburg, (to a lesser degree but still different Swanson) are very different from Kenmore, TJ, and Gunston.

Well, Kenmore is the highest poverty MS and not the one MK is zoned for. So, your point is what? Southie here with kids in a Title 1 school and zoned to high poverty MS-HS, voting MK, who has been endorsed by basically all the community advocates who work to help Title 1 ES like mine.

Wanted to add that the economically disadvantaged kids from Barrett, Barcroft, and Carlin Springs ES are zoned to Kenmore. APS doesn’t give or designate any schools beyond ES Title 1 money, preferring to target ES instead, but KMS would qualify given the percentage of disadvantaged students. It’s absolutely a “South Arlington” school in that sense.

"Very much" in north? I don't know where she lives but McKinley is <1 mile from Rt 50, the dividing line between N & S addresses.

It is when it's presented as a false dichotomy.
"Mary supports shifts" vs. "Miranda supports full time"

I have other issues with Kadera, but RTS is not one of them. She appears interested in planning and troubleshooting to work through possible road bumps. She's been engaged and working on CCPTA to support ALL schools this past year.

Naive NP here: I sincerely don't understand why it's an issue for a white person to use a quote, crediting it to the proper (Black) person, in a sincere (though childish) way of making her point. MK's point was taking the high road when others take the low road. I really do not believe Michelle Obama would object to her use of her image and quote in that context.

It’s not. PP is trying to liken it to using a Meme of a POC to be funny. Not the same thing to tweet an actual quote and picture of the former First Lady as it is to tweet a GIF or Meme of a POC to make a joke or as a “reaction.”

And I don’t think she’s stirring drama. I do think there are a bunch of angry bro Dads who have gone low, and continue to go low, even in print Op Eds. It’s fine to believe APS has made and continues to make mistakes. Calling it’s leaders lazy, dumb, malicious, thuggish, etc., is uncalled for and “low.”

It's also low for Miranda's campaign to encourage Republicans to vote for her in the Dem caucus.

Not OP, but a Black woman. It absolutely is digital blackface for a White person to use a meme of a Black woman to convey a message. Honestly, it was petty and didn't even need to be said. I agree she should have taken the high road, and not let Turner get to her. She's going to do what she's going to do and we all know it.

I'm voting for Mary, but she and the rest of Arlington just needs to stop with the microaggressions.

An inspirational quote is not quite the same thing as a meme. But either way, digital blackface is more about reaction gifs that play on stereotypes of black people, not inspirational quotes.

Thanks for sharing this. I will keep it in mind in the future when I look for GIFs on FB to use!
