Neither Caltech nor MIT really belong on a list like this. They're two of the four best schools in the country but they have a very different type of prestige when compared to the more normal fancy colleges.

"Very different type of prestige". Can you elaborate? It is a STEM prestige, no doubt. In your mind, prestige is foremost a humanities-based honorific?

At the end of the day, Caltech is just a trade school. It's the best trade school in the world (and has the smartest student body of any school in the US), but it's still a trade school.

It doesn't belong with MIT. It's more like Olin, a notch above Cal State SLO, California Maritime...

You're an idiot.

+1000, assuming posters are real they are idiots. Also you can major in History, Philosophy or PoliSci or other humanities or social sciences at Caltech. "Trade School"? Moron. Yeah at the end of the program the tools are yours to keep!

If their website says so, but in reality you don't go there to major in history, philosophy or polisci. I don't believe it's done, regardless of what their website might say. It shows you really don't know this school.

What it shows is that you are an idiot who denies the evidence when it is presented directly to your face.

😆 Lol, what it says is you are an idiot who believes bc internet says so. Don’t believe everything, even if it’s Caltech website. Verify it’s claim. Show me hard evidence showing how many of these majors come out of Caltech.

USNews has got it right when it lumped Caltech with JHU. Both are one dimensional. And when compared with all-around solid universities, they are clustered with Northwestern. This seems about right, below Harvard, Yale, Princeton, Columbia, MIT.

I don't believe it because the internet says so.

I believe it because Caltech says so.

You are really something else. I do not believe you are a real poster. No one could be that dense.

Prove me wrong their website is full of it. If what Caltech website says is true, it should be relatively easy for you to prove how many of these majors it produced.

Prove you wrong? Already did. You're a college flat-earther, just denying evidence right in front of you.

Everyone at caltech are STEMs, ie, one dimensional. They may take non-stem courses as part of their distribution requirement but I bet there’s no standalone philosophy, polisci, or sociology majors there. And in your idiotic case, don’t come back here until you have believable data. Their website is not believable evidence cuz it’s full of it.

according to the Cal Tech common data sets, about 2-3% of the degrees awarded each year are in humanities or social sciences. so that's about 5 students a year.

Are they standalone majors or STEM double majors?

Jesus on a pogo stick I provided the Caltech website and a different poster quoted the frickin' common data set! You're a flat-earther.

How am I a flat earthed when I said USNew got Caltech right?

Thank heavens WSJ detailed the secrets needed to get into... Emory.

All this time I assumed you just needed the money to pay tuition and perhaps proof of your 25 rejection letters from actual top ranked colleges.

At least we now know who pay to read WSJ: Emory, Davidson, and U of Washington grads. WSJ just declared them part of “elite” grads.

This is excerpted from a book. It’s not WSJ investigative reporting.

Please stop with this Columbia flame. It's a mid-low Ivy, nothing more.

U Dub is a better school than WUSTL.

I’m reading the book. The book doesn’t claim the schools are elite. That was the WSJ.

For CS, U Dub is higher ranked, yes. ''Better'' across the board, no.

Both UW and WU are excellent universities. UW has a much broader mission than WU, and is more of an elite institution in terms of overall scientific productivity, impact and breadth. Even in medicine, (WU's strength), UW is arguably an equivalent school. UW does not have the same % of high income students however, so is not as popular among DCUM-types.

the cost to attention is 74k, after tax, that the majority of HHI

Assuming no savings....

Why would you need $35k/yr in FA if you have savings?

average 529 for an 18 year old is something like 27k, assume twice that and you have not quite one year's cost. I think at least 200k in a 529 would be a reasonable expectation to get through a 75k a year school without crushing the parents- I doubt many people have more that than a year's salary socked away in 529s (other than DCUM posters who manage to cram in $1 million while discussing their middle class existences)

Great. So, being responsible and saving all my pennies has resulted in no financial aid. I should have gone to the Caribbean more often!
