If they had been left in their original state they would no longer exist. This way the whole world can have an insight into a preserved history. The Easter island was UNINHABITED when the statue was found.

She dresses in a boring yet unexceptionable manner, raises her children, and smiles and waves or makes small talk at events. We know nothing of her opinions, her preferences, her hopes and dreams. She is a highly polished cypher, reflecting back at us whatever we project onto her.

If this is all fine because it preserves something for the whole world to why not give these items back to the countries of origin to showcase? Seems a wee bit paternalistic and self-serving to suggest that actually only the Brits can provide “an insight into a preserved history.”

Are they really that rare? My son's friend has a megalodon tooth; he showed it to him. His father is a scientist in that field, and apparently at industry conferences there are vendors who sell that sort of thing. I have no idea how much it cost, but considering that they are normal UMC people, I doubt they were dropping thousands or even hundreds on a cool thing for their 7 yo to play with.
