Why can’t you see that just hurts the out of boundary kids??? All the kids in the magnet deserve to be there — all of them. The problem is there are more deserving kids in MoCo than there is space. The 25 set asides for TP inbound creates more seats for OOB kids because a TP kid is not taking one of the OOB seats. Without those set asides there would be less seats for ALL kids! |
Exactly |
I think this is obvious, but sadly, I suspect the poster you responded to thinks none of our kids would get into the magnet. Fortunately for her, her plan is not the case because, based on the number of TP area kids that go to Blair magnet, she would be grossly mistaken. She is also offbase about the racial comment -- kids coming from TP to the magnet are not all white. I totally agree about more deserving kids than spaces. I don't know why some people want to try to make TP kids some kin dof less-than scapegoat. The stats just don't support that theory. So many bright kids in this area. |
^^ bright kids in MoCo overall, not just TP |
I read the reason MCPS put all the STEM magnets from TPES, TPMS and Blair are all in TKPK is because it has the highest concentration of gifted kids.

|
The TP kids are not any smarter than kids from inbound for Eastern or SSIM and they certainly are not smarter than the kids from Frost, Hoover or Pyle.
The fed investigation is going to see all these white kids from TP with much lower scores than not only the rest of the magnet but from OOB kids that were denied admissions. You can't say that one school with 25 kids that score well enough to do magnet work need to stay in their home school because they have a cohort yet another school with 25 kids that don't score as high yet can do the work get to be in a magnet. |
It's true! |
You are an idiot. |
|
My prediction is that MCPS is going to shut down the magnets and just do home school enrichment. Each school will get the same enrichment program and the TPMS magnet will simply end.
TP folks get what they want in having all the seats that they want. Enrichment classes can be focused on the abilities of the kids inside the school's boundaries. So if TP kids are really smart then great the home school classes can be more rigorous. Other DCC folks get what they want and don't have to compete against W parents anymore. There will be enriched classes in their own schools so no sweating getting into TPMS. W school folks get what they want in having all the seats that they want. Since they have the high fliers, they can have multiple enriched classes and group them by ability. This would meet everyone's needs and save money on bussing. |
My prediction is they'll finally fix the gerrymandered boundaries which will somewhat diversify the segregated schools. Then they'll launch a whole new set of micro-consortiums that pair affluent schools with nearby ones that are low-FARMS to help foster even greater diversity. |
In case where boundaries truly are bizarre geographically I agree. However, the diversity rezoning is not going to happen with the feds already investigating discrimination. Schools are prohibited from using race in school assignment. If MCPS tries to side step this again, they'll get nailed even harder the next time. It would be good if MCPS started looking at FARMS and not race but as long as it continues to focus on race it will continue to be on the wrong side of the law. |
I meant SES diversity and I believe it's the right thing to do. The fed investigation is a bone to throw Trump's supporters but isn't going anywhere. |
You’re just too dumb |
Where to start with this idiocy? 1. You have no idea how TP kids are scoring. Would you like to see my kids' scores? They were significantly above the median. No one said TP kids are smarter than any other area, but there certainly are enough to fill the spaces and then some, and they are certainly no less smart than Frost/Hoover/Pyle (not sure why you make a distinction between these schools and others). I will say there was a larger representation of PBES at our HGC several years ago than any other elementary. 2. Not all kids coming from TP are white. I don't know where you're getting this nonsense. 3. You have completely missed the point of the 25 kids. It's not a cohort thing. It's a resources issue coupled with an integration issue. The TP kids FREE UP spots for out of boundary kids. Trump may have made this kind of wishful-thinking "alternative facts" a thing, but just because you want it to be true does not mean the facts support it. Quit bashing the kids and advocate for more spaces overall. |
Isn't that a bit wishful thinking? There are Magnet level teachers and classrooms for 125 kids. |
