Takoma Park MS Magnet - 25 inbound seats?

Anonymous
Is it true that 25 seats are reserved for inbound students? Can anyone provide an official cite for this info?

It is true, there was push back as the program was filled with mostly Bethesda and Potomac kids for years so they anchored 25seats so those kids didn’t have to compete with the rest of the county to ensure that the host area had representatives. Now that TP has moved up market the spots should really be moved to the poorer parts of silver spring.

No. Thank you for the thought though.

It's true and IMO MCPS should restrict the entire program to in-boundary students since it would reduce busing costs.

Is there an official cite from MCPS that confirmed this?

Removing the magnet program entirely would reduce the costs even more.

Is this a case of “If I can’t have it, then neither should you?”. That’s one way to remove the achievement gap...lower standards across the board to the level of the dumbest kid.

Then it wouldn’t be a magnet, it would just be silver spring school with silver spring students and test scores

Why did they have to lower the standards for TP kids? Why couldn’t they compete and get in without help?

I think it is a proper idea that should be discussed during the boundary diversity study.

There is no "boundary diversity study". Find a different hobby.

Hobby??? I was under the impression that for some people DCUM-posting was a full time job.

MCPS has countywide magnet programs that don't include bussing from out of bounds. Just saying..

Where are you going to get the super-achievers from then? The majority of in-bound students are low performing. The high performing in-bound students are already in the program. The program by itself does not make the super-achievers. Families and SES plays a role. Bethesda and Potomac still remains the best bet to provide that support to their students as well as providing the usual high achieving racial groups.

Do you expect high performing students and their highly educated and successful parents to leave their Bethesda homes and move to TPMS? They would rather go to their home W school. The whole magnet program and the attempt to close the achievement gap will fail if these students start going to their home schools. Eventually, the losers will be those high achieveing students from all racial groups who are not rich enough to be in Bethesda.
