New Name for JEB Stuart HS - 9/16 Community Vote

Really? That's the plan? Let the community vote on seventy-something names, then ignore the one that got the most votes?

It's the exact opposite of ignoring it. It's recognizing that 82% prefer something other than the minor variation on the current name.

They've already decided to change the name of JEB Stuart and this confirms Stuart without the initials (aka "Headless JEB") isn't even close to a "compromise" replacement.

They really ought to have another vote with just the top five or so vote getters. There were a lot of ridiculous choices presented on this ballot. In addition, the process of selecting a first, second, and third choice was an additional step which really hasn't added to the clarity of the discussion now.

Narrow down the choices and give each voter one vote. I think we'd get a better idea of what the residents want.

You must not have seen the SB meeting or read the motion where they voted to change it. They very much suggested that Stuart would be a good option.

The board decided that Stuart was a viable alternative, the community voted on it, and now you are indeed arguing that the fact that Stuart won should be ignored.

Triggered Snowflakes are white residents of the Stuart district who want to keep honoring a Confederate general because it makes them think they'll still get to run the PTSA and Boosters clubs for years to come.

WTF?? The people who run the PTSA and Booster clubs have done more for actual Stuart students--of all races and nationalities--than the "Changers" ever will. Do you feel excluded from the Boosters? That's the stupidest thing I've read in this whole discussion.

Never realized that it was such an honor to run the PTSA or work for the Boosters. My kids did not go to Stuart, but I sure wish I had known what an honor it was to work in the snack bar on those very cold nights or hot afternoons. (all seasons booster, here). And, this was not restricted to sports activities. All that time (and money) for the teams and clubs and working to raise money for them. I had no idea that I should be so honored. I did not work even a smidgen as much as those who were in charge and am very grateful to those people who spent hours, hours, and hours supporting the school. I am sure that those people at Stuart have put in long, long hours to raise money to purchase equipment and uniforms, etc. And, now, it's going to the landfill.

And, Triggered Snowflakes are the changers--not the keepers.

So, now we will see if they listen to the community. Predictions?

There is a Marshall but I guess that will go since I assume people will complain about The Marshall Plan eventually. In any event the exact words for the one vote category were really broad:

Justice, Justice Marshall, Justice Thurgood Marshall, Marshall, Thurgood C Marshall, Thurgood Marshall, Thurgood Marshall Justice
444 first
256 second
63 third
763 total [far highest after Stuart]

So call it Justice and hang his portrait. Take the difference between the cheap solution and the expensive and reduce the budget-or let the sending area come up with the money. That school should have people focused on bringing up academic achievement. Which is bad. Better yet get rid of the expensive IB there and it's feeders and the county pay for the change.

Unfortunately, it doesn't work that way. Plus, more people voted for Stuart than Marshall.

It's interesting in the FOIA'd documents that Thurgood Marshall was mentioned at the very beginning of the process by the "changers". And, they are like a dog with a bone. No matter that there was already a Marshall High. Talk about not thinking about unintended consequences.

If they choose this name it will show that the whole thing was rigged from the start.

Indeed. The community voted on it, and 82% of the votes went to other options - in a field of 73 names. They cannot plausibly keep "Stuart" without subjecting themselves to unprecedented levels of ridicule.

It would be like having an election with one incumbent Republican and 72 Democratic primary candidates, and claiming that the Republican deserves the slot because the Democratic candidates split 72 ways, regardless of the fact that the Democrat would trounce the Republican in a general election - indeed, just like Karen Keys-Gammara trounced Chris Grisafe in the recent special election.

That is actually not correct. More people voted for Marshall than Stuart.

If you think staffing a concessions stand gives you the right to veto a name change that would keep minority kids from having to enter the halls of a school named after some Confederate racist who fought to keep their ancestors slaves, you've eaten one bad hot dog too many.

The link to the vote totals is posted earlier on this thread. Stuart got a total of 917 points, to 763 for the various Marshall options.

Ha! While this name change is being considered, DCPS is actually thinking about naming a high school after a notorious racist, the late Mayor for Life Crack-head.

Seems to me that the school and school board are already subjects of ridicule.

If Democrats ran 72 candidates in a general election, and a lone Republican won more of the vote than any one of them, that Republican would indeed get the slot. You're twisting this in bizarre ways to negate the results of the vote. Again, a vote for Peace Valley does NOT equal a vote for Barbara Rose Johns, no matter how many times you insist that it does.

You said more people voted for Stuart than for Justice Marshall. That is not correct. 339 people voted for Justice Marshall and 336 voted for Stuart. And 332 voted for Barbara Rose Johns, another civil right figure.

Between them, Marshall and Johns had more people voting for them (671) than voted for Stuart (336), and more total votes as well (885 compared to 819). And that doesn't include all the other candidates voted for by those wanting a change.

The name Stuart is just as unacceptable as JEB Stuart. No School Board that is 10-2 Democratic can ignore what they've been told and accept Stuart.
