Teachers: What gifts do you throw away?

You cannot please everyone but this is the most convenient , appreciated and useful gift for everyone involved.

Agree. Plus gift cards can expire or be to a place the teacher doesn't like. Not everyone shops at target (hate it!), Amazon, or Starbucks.

I used to work in Marketing. Gift card is a racket. 30% of all gift cards never get used. They get lost, expired, forgotten, underused (still have some small amount of money left) or the customer has to spend more money to use it (the gift card dos not cover the entire amount of the purchase). ALSO, many companies charge you for using their gift cards. It is a money maker for the company and the customers or the gist recipients are the losers in this transaction.

I never give gift cards. I always give cash or check. For teachers I will not give checks because I do not want them to do one more chore of depositing the check. I don't care if someone on DCUM thinks I am tacky. No teacher thinks I am tacky when I gift them cash.

Will you feel offended if a parent gifts you a modest amount (say $15 -%20) in a gift envelope?

I don't know if offended is the right word. I might think you confused me for the babysitter.

That would certainly not be my intention. However, this is hard earned money for me, and I do not want to give anything to you that you would consider useless.

BTW - I am Asian and giving money in certain amounts is a sigh of good luck for us.

Yeah, it's embarrassing that a teacher wouldn't be more culturally aware. The first responding PP probably doesn't live in a diverse area. I think it's fine to give cash.
