What did they settle over? Which song?

His song is a rip-off of a Tom Petty song..

I listened to a comparison and I do not think they are similar at all. Sure when your speed one up and slow the other the beat is the same but its hardly recognizable. I dont see how it was even an issue.

Really? I never thought My Sweet Lord sounded like He's So Fine (still don't) or a few of the other big infringement suits, but these sound similar to me. Tom Petty let the Red Hot Chili Peppers and someone else (the Strokes?) off the hook for (unintentionally?) plagiarizing him, but I don't have a problem with his team drawing the line here.

Yes I am serious. I actually just listened to the youtube comparison and I do not see it..or hear it. I am also a huge Tom Petty fan (not so much Sam Smith) but I do not get it. Oh well!

She really needs to spend more time promoting or producing other people at this point and less time pretending that its 1993.

My DDs (15 and 16) were "grossed" out by her inappropriate "dance moves". It was kind of funny to see their reactions.

Were their reactions based on the fact that they don't care for inappropriate dance moves, or based on the fact that Madonna is 56?

I'm the one who posted the youtube comparison, but in some ways it's misleading to listen to it geared down and mashed up that way. The tempos of the two songs are different, but if you step back, the melody of the whole chorus is exactly the same. If you just think the first two lines of the "Stay with Me" chorus in your head, if you're a Tom Petty fan, you should hear the introductory guitar lick of "Won't Back Down" coming into your head, and then hear Tom singing, "Well, I won't back down, no I won't back down ...."

It looks like you don't focus on melody. That's ok, we all listen to music differently. DW laughs at me because I don't listen to lyrics. I know every bass line, drum fill, and guitar solo from about 1957 to 1995, but I don't know any of the words at all.

This!! Mostly. For me, I see no difference in Miley or Beyonce, or Madonna performing inappropriate dance moves. My girls have accepted it with the younger artists.

I like both of them, studied music, and don't hear it. I do hear similarities, particularly in the three-word refrain and the melody, but it doesn't strike me in any way as obvious plagiarism. There are quite a few differences between the two songs, and I'm inclined to think it was at most inadvertent influence rather than any overt copying.

That's what they all agreed it was, unintentional copying. Still seems weird to give a song a Grammy for songwriting when just a couple weeks early the songwriter agreed to split royalties with a prior song's writer.

Ha, my boys would have had a similar reaction I'm sure if they had watched it. I'm not sure what in the world Madonna is doing but when she dresses and tries to dance like a 20 something she winds up making herself look MUCH older than she really is. She's only in her 50's and she's even in decent shape but dancing like that makes her look stiff and unlimber. Elderly. Probably not the impression she is going for..

Do you guys agree they sound similar?

yes- really annoyed he got so many grammies for ripping off a song.. yuck.. oh well - shutting off now..

same.

Why why why do the Grammys love to lavish one new singer/song with a gazillion awards in one night. Oscars do it too but somehow that doesn't seem to be as wrong to me as when the Grammys do it. Norah Jones comes to mind.

Yes, Norah Jones, Tracy Chapman, Christopher Cross, Adele (to some extent)

All talented artists, but I agree with PP

Anonymous wrote:Kanye actually tried to jump up onto the stage when Beck was accepting for Best Album and do his "Imma let you finish" BS. Unbelievable.

You're missing what happened. He jumped up as if to recreate the Taylor Swift moment, then smiled and got back down. It's clear from Beck's and the audience's reaction that it was a joke. He's grown up a lot since the Swift fiasco. Check it out here -- at first Jay Z and Beyonce looked on horrified -- oh no, not again! -- and then everyone starts laughing because it was a self deprecating joke. http://www.billboard.com/articles/events/grammys-2015/6465654/grammys-2015-kanye-beck-album-of-the-year

Oh no. His after event remarks make it clear. He was totally serious. He explained why B should've won, said Beck and Grammys disrespected the real talent. Etc etc etc.

K was not kidding. He's making a joke of himself. Usher, on the other hand, seems to get better with age.

The thing about Kanye to me is that he's pretty abrasive, but he's not wrong. Beyonce deserved to win best video for Single Ladies that other year over that forgettable Taylor Swift video. (And I love Taylor Swift!). Beyonce's amazing album, which broke the Internet, remember?, deserved to win over Beck. I bet it sold more. Kanye isn't talking about race, but I wonder what role it's playing wih voters here. If you were a black artist selling albums and kept getting passed over for white artists that don't seem as talented, you might start to wonder wtf is going on.

On the other hand if you say what's on your mind and talk about racism in the industry, that could hurt your fan base, so I can totally understand why most people don't speak up. But I respect Kanye for saying something. I am so tired of white privilege at award ceremonies. And of popular black artists getting ghettoized to the rap category.

Note that West has put his money where his mouth is and given other artists his awards when he thought they were more deserving.

I'm white, if that matters.

There is a time and place for everything. Up on the stage while someone else is getting an award is not the time or the place,
I'm black and he is embarrasssing

Embarrassing to whom? So, because Kanye is black, his antics makes you embarrassed as a black person? GTFOHWTBS.

If it was full length I would love that dress. But it sort of looks old ladyish at that length. I'm not sure why..

An old lady wouldn't be showing her ass, however.

Is he wearing a v-neck T? Just....no. As an undershirt ok, but as a regular shirt no. It makes him look like he has man boobs.
