Still not sure how I feel about the Sam Smith - Tom Petty settlement. What did they settle over? Which song? His song is a rip-off of a Tom Petty song.. I listened to a comparison and I do not think they are similar at all. Sure when your speed one up and slow the other the beat is the same but its hardly recognizable. I dont see how it was even an issue. Really? I never thought My Sweet Lord sounded like He's So Fine (still don't) or a few of the other big infringement suits, but these sound similar to me. Tom Petty let the Red Hot Chili Peppers and someone else (the Strokes?) off the hook for (unintentionally?) plagiarizing him, but I don't have a problem with his team drawing the line here. Yes I am serious. I actually just listened to the youtube comparison and I do not see it..or hear it. I am also a huge Tom Petty fan (not so much Sam Smith) but I do not get it. Oh well!
I'm the one who posted the youtube comparison, but in some ways it's misleading to listen to it geared down and mashed up that way. The tempos of the two songs are different, but if you step back, the melody of the whole chorus is exactly the same. If you just think the first two lines of the "Stay with Me" chorus in your head, if you're a Tom Petty fan, you should hear the introductory guitar lick of "Won't Back Down" coming into your head, and then hear Tom singing, "Well, I won't back down, no I won't back down ...." It looks like you don't focus on melody. That's ok, we all listen to music differently. DW laughs at me because I don't listen to lyrics. I know every bass line, drum fill, and guitar solo from about 1957 to 1995, but I don't know any of the words at all.
I like both of them, studied music, and don't hear it. I do hear similarities, particularly in the three-word refrain and the melody, but it doesn't strike me in any way as obvious plagiarism. There are quite a few differences between the two songs, and I'm inclined to think it was at most inadvertent influence rather than any overt copying.
