I was in the original group (I think I still am). I was initially pretty excited because I love French and would've loved to send my child to a French immersion school. I also recognized that the school would not be ready to go soon enough for my child to go there, which was a bummer but not a deal breaker. As far as the dissolution of the group, I think that we should've met in person before trying to dive into a ton of detail about process, visioning, etc. It was too soon for those conversations, and having them happen exclusively online between strangers led to a ton of assumptions about people's motives and bruised feelings for whatever reason. I also think that the main reason that the meeting didn't end up happening was scheduling - there just wasn't a time that was good for everyone and it seemed like people felt that everyone had to be included that first time. I spent some time reading all of Yu Ying's paperwork to see how they did it and recognized that it was going to be a lot of work. I wasn't necessarily opposed to working hard, even for something that wouldn't directly benefit my child, but it really seemed like there were some specific skill sets needed that I personally do not have. All of that said, if anyone wants to restart the group, I would love to come to the meeting. I know a lot more about how education in DC works now (in both public and charter contexts).
I was also in the original group and had a great deal of excitement. That soured when, as some have described, premature conversations happened online as opposed to in person. I felt torn about perhaps unintentional improper motives from the expressed desire of steering the group in certain directions well before that was appropriate IMO. We should've met, which was difficult in and of itself, and then fleshed some preliminary things before potential visions were stated. It was also uncomfortable for someone to suggest we provide our resumes, which, while I admit I don't have a background in education, seemed invasive since we hadn't met personally. That said, I still believe a French immersion program would be great for the city, though my children won't attend. We're in a great language charter now (thank goodness). My suggestion is for anyone with interest to start a new thread and avoid some of the pitfalls of this group. First things first- meet in person! I would suggest to someone who wants to take the lead to find a place and time and send out a thread where you invite interested people. I would come and would like to help out, though my own children won't benefit. There are a lot of people in this city who would like to see more programs for all kids. I would also suggest that while you might have good motives in steering the program this way or that, keep in mind that people are sensitive to attempts to limit enrollment based upon whatever criteria you pose. The lottery, which requires admission solely on the basis of lottery "luck" (and/or having a sibling or being a staff), won't allow you to show a preference to certain kids. You can encourage families to apply (for example targeting Francophones), but you can't give them a preference. Good Luck to whomever wishes to pick up the reigns!
