Why has DC failed so badly on clearing the streets?

Where is Muriel Bowser in all of this?

This is your typical snowstorm, OP.

We got an extremely event when precipitation happened in unusually cold conditions, which turned the snow to ice.

In the DC area, this practically never happens! I have lived here for more than 20 years, and this was my first. The blizzards we had in 2010 and 2016 dumped a lot more snow, but it was easier to shovel.

I few up here. There is nothing typical about the frozen ice slabs that won’t melt til spring. This was more an ice storm than snow.

And what might she do with this frozen tundra? Blow torch it?

The fact that nothing happened for several days after the initial attempted cleanup is infuriating. The same thing can be said of Montgomery County. Just north in Bethesda they’re finally opening up River Road by hauling away snow. When there are two lanes going each direction and they only plow one and 3/4 each direction, you are only left with one lane open in each direction. It’s like these people are idiots. And coming back now just proves that they know it was a mistake. The initial cleanup was pathetic.
In 1979 the mayor of Chicago was swept right out of office days after a blizzard with a failed cleanup. Chicago has never failed that snow removal since then. All of these local politicians should be ashamed and run out of a job.

The extended cold weather made removal very difficult. It didn't get above freezing for a week. So, while sleet and snow shouldn't be an overwhelming issue, the continued cold hampered any efforts at removal.

It happens every 10-15 years. Get over it.

Look...the big mistake is they should have been out plowing like crazy on the Sunday when it was sleeting and snowing, knowing that the extended arctic temperatures were going to cause it to turn into snow concrete.

That is the really unusual aspect. Typically, DC will get a storm like this and 24 hours later it's back into the 40s and it melts and is easy to plow. It's kind of crazy for the temperature to not get above freezing for like 2 weeks straight.

That's hopefully the #1 take away from all this.

I shoveled like 5-6 times Sunday and saw multiple plows each time. The problem was that the stuff they plowed turned into ice quite fast.

The number of whiners in this city never ceases to amaze. Some of you seem like you’re afraid to leave your house.

Hmmm let me guess what quadrant of the city you live in . . .

I have been going to work, leaving my house every day, shoveled Sunday and Monday, etc. The problem is that the city refuses to plow some streets. Like at all. That is a failure on their part. That is what we pay taxes for. I drive around thr city and see bike lanes clear in rich neighborhoods before roads are touched across town. That doesn’t cease to amaze me.

Hey now. Even Ward 3 thinks plowing the bike lanes was idiotic.

And where are the screeching children we call our city council? It's like the entire DC government has been AWOL.

Im convinced the DC government's gameplan is to do absolutely nothing, and just wait for it all to melt. Then they'll try to gaslight everyone into thinking there was nothing anyone could have done to help it and they'll say "snowcrete" a lot.

nah. Their plan is too blame Bowser (who is obviously not blameless) for everything.

Really disappointing to see Bowser trying to shirk responsibility. It's your job. Good riddance.

Who exactly do you think is in charge other than the executive?

Please. This city is run by the city council. Bowser is an extraordinarily weak mayor. I'm sure all the members of the city council will now pretend they were powerless to do anything.

How do you mean?

Does the city council direct DPW? DDOT? Do they request the national guard? Place contracts for snow removal? Authorize overtime?

The council is responsible for DC budget so I'd be interested to understand if budget limitations were part of the problem. Given the state of emergency declared I didn't think that's it.

You either don't know how DC government works or you're a Bowser shill trying to deflect responsibility. Maybe both!

It's like the whole government has gone on vacation. You don't hear from anyone on the city council, let alone the mayor, and you never seen anyone from the city actually working on the streets.

Snow plows came to our highly residential neighborhood in CCDC on Monday night, and yesterday during rush hour, snow plows blocked Mass Ave inbound just north of Dupont.
What is the sense of having plows in quiet neighborhoods at bedtime, and plows blocking traffic during rush hour on a Tuesday morning? When driving home, the Mass Ave plows were blocking traffic in the outbound lanes. If this is not the epitome of inefficiency, I don't know what is. It's as if someone ordered the plows to do the exact opposite of common sense.
Whomever is coordinating this effort--if anyone is--must be truly stupid or completely clueless about DC traffic patterns.
I can only imagine the diplomats on Mass Ave shaking their heads at the failure of the US education system. We are a capitol city run by idiots. Why did we vote for them?!?
