Wasn't he heard saying after his performance waiting for his results that only if they had let him go to Beijing in 2022, he would be on that podium?

Yes, you heard right.

And as he is local, let’s just say that my reference to his arrogance is from direct knowledge of who he is.

New poster.
One doesn’t need deep insight to notice that he is unfortunately full of himself, which is not the end of the world for a 21 yo but I am surprised his parents don’t keep him in check.
He invented his own nickname, put it on a t shirt and wears it. He skates to his own inspirational quotes.
It’s normal for a young person to feel that their thoughts and feelings are more significant and novel than they are, but there needs to be an adult to tell them it’s ridiculous.

At the same time, he was extremely gracious to the gold medal winner, going to him immediately and congratulating/embracing him, and in his interviews afterward.

I liked how someone joked it was because he himself really needed a hug. I find it believable

Maybe, but it was a classy thing to do. Malinin didn't cry that he was robbed of a medal or try to denigrate his opponent. He pulled himself together within 5 minutes of his disastrous skate and immediately went to congratulate the Kazakh gold medal winner. It seemed sincere, and I was impressed at the sportsmanship.

Ilia couldn't claim he was robbed if he wanted to (though he kind of did claim that in his reference to Beijing while he was waiting for his score). He fell apart under pressure and singled his quad axel, fell twice during his program, doubled his quad loop, and his presentation was really poor for him, which is understandable given the breakdown, but even with 2 falls, and a really poor effort at presentation and skating skills, he still got a higher program component score (81.72) than Petr Gumenick (80.65), who skated a clean, beautiful program, landing all 5 attempted quads, with strong spins and he skated his entire program with fluidity, grace, and high quality skating and edge skills. In my opinion, Ilya got a much higher score than what he deserved for how he skated in the Olympics, and it calls into question the entire judging system and how the judges use the component score to play favorites and punish disfavored skaters, their coaches, or their countries.

Also, Ilya was not entirely gracious in defeat. He was heard on a hot mic saying he wouldn’t have skated like that if they had sent him to Beijing in 2022. He’s a young guy, and was hurt, and we all understand and empathize with the pressure he was under and wish him the best, but he’s not a poster child for being a gracious loser, and if anything, he was overscored for his performance in these Olympics.

Plenty of track coverage on Peacock.

Yeah it’s just that there’s considerably less prime time coverage compared to the early 2000s when Apollo Ohno was skating. There has not been a star like him since he retired.

With a tiger parent. The Winter Olympics are a festival of tiger parenting.

Me, too! She's so mentally strong and joyful on the ice, and it's infectious. Happy it's Alysa!

Especially when she was so miserable in Beijing 4 years ago, with her family trying to dodge Chinese “officials.”

She was born in California, you racist, xenophobic POS.

She has TWO Olympic gold medals, World gold, World bronze, US Nationals gold, the list continues. She’s happy, beloved by fans all over the world, and thriving. She’s represented Team USA with pride and joy and dignity.

And then there’s you.

I'm catching up on watching the men's skating performances, obviously saw the results already.

Why were the NBC commentators so dismissive of the Kazakh skater's chances for this Olympics when he just got the silver at the last world championship? Even after he'd landed a bunch of clean jumps, they were acting like he was barely a.podium.contender in this Olympics "here to plant seeds for the next one."

Obviously they expected Malinin to win and also I know the Japanese skaters had some blips too otherwise they could have bumped him. But they just seemed very uninterested in his performance - they were talking about other random things during it.

What a contrast from the 2022 women's figure skating ending...nice to see joyful competitors and good sportsmanship rather than the drama and disappointment.
