BC and BU are different applicant pools from Colby and Bates. SLAC do attract social elites.

It's amusing you make a distinction between "social" elites and .... who exactly? You're either elite or you aren't. Sorry!

Zuckerberg is an economic elite. Fukuyama is an academic elite. Neither are social elites.

Crude

Grocery bags, dog poop, and old shoes all go to the same dump. Why are you acting like one kind of trash is better than another? Colby, Bates, BC, BU... all the same. Don't split hairs.

They’re academic dumpster fires but students at Colby are more likely to have pedigree and a decent handicap.

The BU and BC people are going to be different. And they are both going to be very different than a kid who prefers Grinnell to a city school. Different kids, different interests, different talents. No overlap.

If a kid is applying to BU, BC, Colby, and Bates, it means they are still perplexed about how they want to go about things. Which is fine and normal.

If you find yourself in a position where some mom is talking about SLACs and social elites, yeah, well, take a gummy and check out

You people rate relegation to schools like Colby. Low class trash

This is so damning. BC can barely beat the University of Florida or Irvine. California students rejected by Berkeley, UCLA, and San Diego dread going to Irvine.

Tom Tom,

BC is a better school, clearly, than any of the above schools — even 20 years ago. It was underrated by US News then, and it is underrated now. BC is now the clear #3 in that area, behind only MIT and Harvard. Then Tufts, then Northeastern, then BU.

BC is not clearly the #3 school in that area. BC, BU, NEU, and Tufts attract students of similar caliber but differentiate themselves based on preferences. BC might be a top choice for Catholic students, but for others, it may hold little to no appeal.

Crediting. Tufts has historically been more highly regarded and has a better alumni network nationwide.

Sounds like you folks don’t know New England: your info is out of date. Boston-seeking students are certainly not dissuaded by a Jesuit school. I suggest you do a search on this site to see why. Tufts historically has been higher, but it has had a very tough 20-30 years — as has BU. If you think Tufts has a better alumni network than BC, all I can say is, “Yikes!”

Trajectories: Tufts is still going down, BU is finally holding steady, and Northeastern and BC are continuing to go up. It is important to keep in mind where schools are headed; I would certainly not be betting my money on the prestige of a Tufts degree a generation from now.

What’s so bad about bc. It’s much stronger than Colby for almost any degree path and BC’s career outcomes are much better. Like cool to spend 4 years in the middle of nowhere Maine, but that doesn’t get you jobs.

BC/Colby/Bates is pretty continuous. It just means you prioritize a strong residential campus community.

I think Emory, ND, Georgetown are a different tier

Maybe or maybe not academically- but BC seems just as hard to get in. I would put it at the low end of the Emory ND Georgetown tier. BC way tougher than any of the schools above.

Holy cross is an outlier in that group.

Wash your mouth out with soap after saying BC is in the same tier as Emory ND and Georgetown. Students at those three schools made responsible decisions in high school.

Wash your mouth out with soap...? Who's the philistine now? Sounds like a poverty stricken hick got a lucky break from an admissions officer interested in economic diversity. Take a sewing needle to your ego and as you listen to the air hiss out ask yourself what/who broke you so completely. Sad.

BC's vibe is one of gouche characteristics and striver mentality. Will never be socially prestigious.

Do you all get these descriptions from a book or something? Also this is a nonsensical utilization of “gauche.”
