Which one?

I am in PTA board in one and I would like to make things better. This has gotten out of hand in Tilden.

I don’t know where this teacher is from. Our experience was very positive at GPES and very different at Tilden. The difference was shocking. WJ is great, thankfully.

Middle school sucks pretty much everywhere.

Yes that is true. However, that doesn’t mean that there can’t be something particularly awful about a particular school. A lot of people have a problem at Tilden and they shouldn’t be dismissed as oh middle school stinks.

+1

Tilden problem is too much. Something is just wrong here.

Someone started an anonymous Instagram about Tilden girls and the 5 posts were so horrific. Body shaming, mean, saying a girl should have tried to kill herself better, they are ugly, etc…. Calling out specific girls by name. It was banned pretty quickly thank god but I am so embarrassed being a part of this school.

Show me a middle school without a mean girls group.

It’s a whole ‘nother level at Tilden because the parents of these girls are aware and actively assist in their DDs bullying other students.

This school seems so toxic. Are the boys as bad?

It's tolerable when it comes to boys.

I have a 6th grade girl there and have heard none of this. Nobody should be treated the way that's being described here but I'm not sure it's indicative of the school culture.

It’s the 8th grade girls. Not a small group. The account was active and talked about various girls in a demeaning disgusting way.

Yah, its not some isolated small group issue.

All of them?

Well, mine is second-hand info but DH has a coworker whose daughter goes to Tilden - 8th grade - and last fall she was bullied by a former friend to the point that the police got involved. My understanding is, there were death threats and bodily harm threats.
Like I said, I don't know many details but I also have a teenage daughter and, however imperfect it may be, we don't have it THAT bad in our MS.

obviously, no. it is a couple of small groups of girls within the school. it’s disturbing and their parents allow them to get away with it.

I have an 8th grade boy at Tilden and he has had a very good experience. He hasn't experienced or even heard of any of the social media/bullying issues described in this thread.

He’s flat out lying to you. The entire grade knows about it. Boys and girls.

That might not be the case. Boys often miss the bullying of girls because it’s usually exclusion and cyber bullying rather than physical attacks.

Exactly. Plus he's not on social media, which is where most of this seems to be occuring.

The boys goat all of this on and are just as guilty of gossiping and body shaming online and in person. Do not make the boys innocent.

Tilden has seen some of its best teachers transfer out or they are on their way out now. It's the principal's doing, lot's of issues and in general staff are not fans.

The current principal is new this year.

How’s the new principal? Tilden has had an unusually high number of teacher openings posted and I wondered if it was due to parents, admin, or maybe both.

I imagine this will be true for most MCPS schools this year. Many teachers left mid-year and more and more have had enough and are either retiring, or changing careers. And not just MCPS - this is a nation-wide problem

It’s been a really rough year for all teachers, but Tilden truly stood out for needing more than most. Tbh, it definitely appeared to be the middle school with the most openings this year (by a lot). Just curious why.

Yah, if tnat's the case then it's that usual MCPS problem. It's Tilden specific problem. School has been going downward.

It starts in 7th grade there and a lot of it is mom-directed. The over the top b’nai mitzvah celebrations help foster a culture of exclusion since some students are not only not invited, but then are the few who don’t have the custom hoodie favor to wear to school.

I have noticed this issue and tried to keep it low profile with our kids. Mostly failed in that effort. Some self reflection is needed by all of us.

It's very hard for 7th graders to understand how some other kids may be feeling due to being excluded.

It is grotesque to send kids to school with clothing that marks who is in and who is out as a way of honoring a religious event. Kids do plenty of dividing as it is. The parents don’t need to facilitate it.

Amen. Just because it's a 1000 student population doesn't mean that kids are oblivious to other kids wearing clothes or other markings of an "in" crowd to which they are not welcomed. Parents please pay attention.

Any update? It’s pretty easy to figure out who started an IG account.
