Chinese balloon flying

Anonymous
Where it's headed: The balloon could exit the east coast of the United States as early as Saturday morning, based off a NOAA weather model. Two US defense officials have told CNN the balloon is expected to reach the East Coast and then pass out to sea in the southeast, near the Carolinas. US officials had said previously that the flight path of the balloon, first spotted over Montana on Thursday, could potentially take it over a “number of sensitive sites” and they were taking steps to “protect against foreign intelligence collection.”

The US has not ruled out shooting it down: US President Joe Biden and national security team officials have discussed options including shooting the balloon down, according to a senior administration official. Earlier, the military had advised against shooting down the balloon due to the risk of falling debris, but the situation could change as the balloon moves towards the East Coast.

China is clearly projecting it's military prowess these days everywhere around the world, but they will step on Superman's cape here pretty soon and get slapped down pretty hard by the big kid on the block.

A country with a population bigger than ours, the largest economy in the world, a strong work ethic, and an excellent education system? They developed it themselves.

What?? Ours is by far the largest economy in the world.

Look, I don't have faith in too many American institutions these days, but I do have faith in our military if push comes to shove. And so do the Chinese, believe me. That's why they try these little aggressions - they know they're not ready for an actual conflict with us.

This. Which is why, when the Pentagon says it isn't a threat and recommended against doing anything about it, I believe them.

This is all just fomenting another right wing outrage.

You realize the announcements to the public are often to avoid unrest and freaking out.

Do you really think you are told about every battle and threat the cia, DOD, etc deals with and encounters. It’s why there are top secret classified documents.

They're testing us.

*IF* it has the capability to be steered, it's not being meaningfully used. Because, so far the balloon has tracked the NOAA wind model. The only thing that's steered it has been the winds.

Multiple reports have indicated it has steering capabilities. It isn't "just a balloon".

It is over NC now, presumably heading out to sea.

We will see if this administration has the backbone to down this thing once it is over open waters. They sure didn't have it when the balloon first entered our airspace and shooting it down would have been low risk.

Specifics and citations needed. That substructure does not appear to have anything to propel it. The only thing it may have is ability to raise and lower itself into different wind currents.

Any steering the balloon supposedly has isn't being used except to keep it within the path that NOAA modeled for it. It'll be over the Atlantic in a few hours.

There have been several reports that it is maneuverable..... starting with the pentagon spokesperson in a press conference yesterday.

IMO - this is even more reason to down the balloon. Find out what is there........ and, of course, send a message to China that we have, and will keep, their toy.

Yes I saw those reports. They say the “balloon” is being guided by people on the ground. Unfortunately those people are linked to the GOP and Fox News. So no way DOJ can touch them.

Oh, FFS. You sound uninformed.
Listen to the pentagon spokesperson, Brig Gen Pat Ryder......

Well if it's maneuverable it hasn't been terribly successful at maneuvering because it's missed most targets of any potential strategic interest along the way by hundreds of miles, and has pretty much just following prevailing winds
