Why do some people give out full-sized candy bars for Halloween?

… and this is why we have an obesity epidemic in this country. I consider buying the large candy bars every year because I too, like to spread joy.

My conscience always leads me back to the fun size and instead I spread the joy with an enthusiastic response to the awesome costumes.

Huh. I’ve never seen that one.

Update: OP would have had a stroke. We went TOT-ing on the slightly later side (still early, but after most of the toddlers and kindergartners were home) and a new full bars house in our neighborhood told the kids they could each take FIVE full bars. I know people are going to say that didn’t happen, but yeah, it really did. I guess they overbought and were really committed to not having leftovers in the house. My kids’ minds were suitably blown, but they took 2 and 3, respectively. DH ate one last night. Madness!

It was bad enough when they called those tiny things "Fun Size" but now they don't even have enough room to print "fun size" on the wrapper. They only print "S" on one side -- not even Snickers. They suck.

When I was ToT as a kid, there was no such thing as "fun size." It was all huge, full sized candy. And oddly enough people weren't fat either. Or diabetic. Imagine that -- an entire pillow case filled with full sized candy. Those were the days my friend, we thought they'd never end.

You’re describing a “mini” not a fun size. A fun size bar is about 1/3 the size of a full size bar.

Once again, the “sugar rush” myth has been long debunked.

What? I've never seen this before. Are you sure the home isn't owned by a witch who wants to eat your children?

HA! I literally laughed out loud. —np

I just grabbed the last three bags of candy (Milky Ways) at our store (actually there were five and I left two for someone else to buy)

There was nothing left to buy at my store today because some time in the last two days they took down Halloween and put up Christmas. WTH, Harris Teeter?

I support Full Bars 2022, but Halloween is the same date every year. Get your candy with your regular grocery order.

I actually had already gotten plenty of full size bars to hand out, but DC texted me in the morning that they had play rehearsal after school. Pick up was during prime ToT hours. I didn’t want to leave the full size bars out on the porch in case someone came and took them all. So I figured I’d grab a bag of fun size to leave in a bowl while the house was empty. Best laid plans. I suppose no one was going to steal the stupid gingerbread house.

How old are all of you saying you only got full-sized as a kid? I’m 45 and don’t remember anything of the sort. It was all small candy for me in the 80s.

48yo here. No full size bars in New Jersey when I grew up either.

As an immigrant, it never ceases to amaze me what brings Americans joy- but clearly full-size candy bars bring lots of you joy. I guess it makes sense because everywhere you go all the food is supersized. I will remember that for next Halloween so I can be a fun neighbor.

Teacher here. Make his/her meltdown our problem right? Gee. Thanks.

Not PP but I've given up policing when or how much candy they eat in the weeks post-Halloween. Not a battle I have the energy to pick- people want to give this stuff out, my kid is going to eat it. We do try to take a few pieces out every day to try to whittle it down faster but my oldest catches on so have to be careful!

I know you can answer that one from personal experience, OP.

This thread is yet another reminder to NEVER underestimate the insignificant things painfully insecure, status-obsessed strivers are internally clocking in their heads. Such a miserable and insufferable lot. And then they wonder why other parents ghost them and won't let their kids play date with their kids.

Yeah I grew up in upstate NY and it was not common at all- IIRC sometimes the fire trucks would drive around handing them out? Which seems weird to me now so maybe I am misremembering, lol. But it was just a lot of smaller stuff like smarties, starburst, etc. Probably similar quantity but smaller volume compared to what my kids brought home the other night.
