I just do not understand her apparent desire to suppress her own identity though - can’t get much whiter than the names Katherine, Spencer, and Anne (not to mention shortening her name to Kaling).

Don’t you though?
She isn’t Gen Z or Gen Alpha.

She’s Gen X.

I sort of don’t get this. How involved was her family in the Indian community? To me she is just living the life of a successful rich girl from a rich Boston suburb who made a shit ton of money and who likes nice things and has good taste. Mindy grew up the child of doctors in Weston MA, which in the 80s/90s was the richest suburb in Boston. She went to NCDS for middle school, a super expensive catholic school, and BBN for high school, a super academically elite super expensive private school. Both were VASTLY white in the 1980s and 90s. Then she went to Dartmouth, which is super elitist and also mostly white in the 1990s. Mindy projects rich white lady because that is what she grew up with! I don’t think it’s anti south asian. She is in fact very pro south Asian on the shows she developed.

Most of us South Asian Gen Xers grew up in similarly (or more) white environments. But most of us - at least the ones I know - have given our children European, Christian names. I agree about her shows, though, so I find the contrast puzzling.

Hm, I know very few Indian people who have given their children white, Christian names. Even the ones married to white men have given their children easy to pronounce Indian names or names that could come from either culture (lots of Mayas and Nicks out there).

Mindy is American, and her name is Mindy FFS. Why you think she should name her kids typical Indian names simply based on ethnicity is pretty narrow minded.

+1

I think she does the best she can re identity. It was *hard* growing up here in the 80s and 90s. I’m mostly anti religion but I wonder sometimes if it’s because I just didn’t want to be Hindu and be different in yet another way when I was a kid. Many of us do have identity issues. There weren’t enough of us to have a culture. So we picked what we were around. We are third culture kids. There is nowhere we truly fit in. Do you think everyone was valuing diversity like they do now??

Would I name my kids Anne and Catherine? No. But I surely do some things that someone else thinks makes me less Indian or not proud of myself. I am proud of my culture and family but it took a lot of effort to get there. I have loved what she has done with her shows (except maybe that her characters generally like white guys). But she has given representation to stories that are really good and never would have been told. Leave her alone.

Every WOC who dates white men is a source of derision here. Amal Clooney, Meghan Markle, Mindy Kaling, Jennifer Lopez, Lauren Sanchez (she might deserve it).

Taylor and Travis are probably the most obscene public/attention seeking couple and they get praised here . It amazes me they have a fan thread on DCurbanmom of all places

Sure, pages and pages of people just agreeing with each other. Lol

lol. Page after page of posts saying that relationship is fake and Travis is called a white trash dolt.

as obnoxious and insincere as Mindy Kaling is, I will always think she's a win for both chubby girl representation and Indian representation.

She's not my cup of tea but I think seeing chubby women of color do well in the entertainment industry - the worst industry for women - is good for humanity.

Yeah, but speaking as a chubby Indian-American woman myself, I'd like to see myself represented by an actually nice, non-self-aggrandizing chubby Indian-American celebrity.

You and Kaling are not the same. Her kids are with her every time she travels. She's surviving just fine.

Plus she’s leagues beyond any of the harpies posting harsh criticisms. She has no idea who you are and doesn’t care because you are nothing to anyone…
maybe your kids love you and care about you but that’s about it.

Their kids don’t love or care about them either. That’s why they’re here, angrily posting about Mindy Kaling of all people.

This made me laugh. I'm not a Mindy fan but I agree with this 100%

People in thread really are threatened by Indian-American women who do well for themselves.

I don’t love some of the Hollywood ass kissing she does but she plays the game and is a strong, creative genius of a woman. I used to read her blog back in the first like year of the office when she had money for the first time and would buy stuff, like a DVF dress or a mini cooper, and be like I’m fancy AF now!

I read that blog too!

I love Mindy and am impressed by her obvious intelligence and wit. Truly surprised she had to resort to sperm donors for children but happy she gets to have her own biological children in her own timeline.

Are you STILL mad that Mindy Kaling can't be affected by your racism? You are so threatened it's sad.

+1 she didn’t find the right partner so built her family on her own terms. Good for her. And had them herself, no surrogate. Btw her choice also means she retains control of her fortune, which is smart. No gazillions in child support to lame male partners like so many wealthy female celebs. She very smart.

Plenty of us have millions of dollars. DC is the most affluent region in America. And I’m happily married with children I created naturally with my husband - that is something she could never buy.

...........

Do you really think your millions are the same as Mindy's millions? She's talented, hilarious, and famous. Her shows are watched by hundreds of millions of people around the world. Her success is exceptional - something you could never buy. Being married with children is...not exceptional.

She’s a D list celebrity. 99% of Americans have no clue who she is.

Fame is also horrible. Most people don’t want to be famous. For her community especially, her parents are the ones with the esteemed career here and money since they are doctors.

I would bet Mindys fans are latte liberals and Tiktokers not the Indian American community
