Our country is bankrupt.....are you prepared for a total economic shutdown? Do you have food/water stored away? Do you own a gun to protect your home from desperate people and looters? I give it a few weeks, 2 months TOPS, before the system implodes and chaos ensues. |
OP, am I correct in thinking you are fairly young? As someone of pretty advanced years I don't feel the situation to be that threatening. However, those years have also taught me to realize I am quite capable of being wrong, |
I don't think there is any threat of imminent collapse. Have you ever been to Mumbai? I think it's going to be more of a slow descent to that level of development.
Spoiler alert: the top 5% live exceedingly well in that kind of environment. The other 95%...not so much. |
Quickly becoming the same ratio in this country. So, maybe a revolution is necessary. |
We are Japan. Enjoy your lost decade but don't worry, it will be global. Think stagflation and deflation. |
Put your money where your mouth is OP. I will buy your house for 50% of market today. I will pay in gold and let you live rent free for 60 days. At this point you should be able to buy it back from my broke, desperate self at a pittance. |
I will confess that this kind of post makes me think more about buying a gun to defend against "desperate people." |
Hey OP, there are a bunch of like-minded guys in camos stomping around in the woods. They have read your mind.
Here is a map to help you relocate: ![]() |
I'd be more worried if the OP knew how to spell |
I don't think a collapse is necessarily eminent. But I do think that those of you who live and work in the city (any large U.S. city) are going to have the most difficulties. We are back and forth to D.C. every few years. But we own a home in a relatively rural area. We live on the water. We have plenty of land. And my family knows how to hunt, fish, and farm. We aren't surrounded by thousands of people. Fewer people = Less risk of crime. And our community wouldn't hesitate to help those in need. There would be no reason for people to start stealing....we would share with our neighbors. We also have two large german Shepherd dogs. And yes, we do own guns.
I'm honestly not worried. I think things will get better in our country. But I do think many people in America have lost the ability to take care of themselves and their families. Just look at what happened after Katrina. People waited assuming "the government" would help. When the government didn't show up, people got desperate. We were also affected by Katrina. No one looted. No one started breaking into homes. We just quietly went about the business of rebuilding and helping our neighbors. But again, we were far away from a large city. And we were prepared to take care of ourselves without the help of the government. |
OP here. Thank you for your sincere response. I have similar thoughts as you in terms of how I positioned myself geographically. I'm west of the city, edging the suburbs. There are farms around me and streams that I could use, if need be. But my main concern would not be my my neighbors, but the hoards of people coming from DC and the dense suburbs. My community is visible from a highway and I fear that desperate people, who would kill for supplies, would find their way into our neighborhood. I have 2 large dogs and we do have guns, but I can't imagine turning to that. That said, I still fear the choas of this large DC Metropolitan area, especially if the system shuts down and is not able to come back up in time for people to get their basic needs of food, water and power to heat their homes. I would help my neighbors in need. I just cannot feed suburbia.....I wish everyone would prepare themselves for things like this. |
You people need serious meds. |
Have you not seen all the natural disasters in the past year? Did you not feel the earthquake we experienced her a month ago? Why is it so crazy to be prepared? |
The way you guys are talking it's like stocking a nuclear arsenal to tackle an ant infestation. It's one thing to have some cash and shelf-stable food tucked away. It's a whole different planet to think you will ever need to protect yourself from desperate looters "from the city." |
You guys are nuts. If there were a natural disaster (like in Haiti, for example), everybody in the city would work together to help each other. We would use boats up and down the potomac to *purchase* (yes, purchase) food from all over the east coast and we'd distribute it on bicycles. No need to attach you guys out in the woods with guns. |
