Clomid and Estradiol

Anonymous
Anyone else on these two drugs? This is my second cycle and I just ovulated two days ago. Yesterday and today, I am extremely bloated. Is that an after effect of the two drugs? I did not have this reaction during the first cycle.

Also, did Clomid mess with your OPK? I've gotten darker than the control lines for 3 days now.

And, my doctor does not think it is necessary to monitor me in any way while on these drugs...no blood work, no ultrasounds, etc. Does that sound normal?

I'm sorry you are going through this.
Did an OB or an RE prescribe this for you?
If it's an OB, honestly I'd switch doctors. One of the side effects of Clomid is too many follicles (could be a cause of the bloating), so if you are not being monitored with ultrasounds you could end up pregnant with multiples.
Are you able to go in for an ultrasound just to make sure that's not the case?
If you go to an RE they will monitor you everyday before ovulation so you will know exactly when to time intercourse or do an IUI.
Good luck.

I don't know about the side effects you are experiencing but it concerns me that your doctor does not want to monitor you more closely.

This concerns me as well. I produced a huge number of follicles on the lowest dose of clomid (50mg) & had to cancel the cycle b/c the risk of multiples was too high. I also felt bloated when that happened. How do you know what's going on with your ovaries if you're not getting any ultrasounds and bloodwork to check your estrogen levels? Are you producing one follicle? Two? Twelve?

The estradiol is to thicken your uterine lining because Clomid typically thins the lining. Again, without ultrasound monitoring, you have no idea what Clomid is doing to your lining and whether you need the estradiol or whether it is helping.

I just don't get how doctors can be so irresponsible with these drugs when even a layperson like me knows what the protocol should be for clomid cycles!

Which MD did you see?

OP here. I saw my OBGYN (Dr. Youseffi). I miscarried last year (Sept) at 7 weeks. And we've actively tried since November 2010.
Partner has great sperm, we're 32, I temp and usually ovulate around day 12 or 13. When I asked what the next steps are, she said 50 mg Clomid and Estrogen. (This is my second cycle). I asked about the chance of multiples and she said it only raises your chance of having them by 5%. She seemed to think that was not an issue. She wants me to come in for a post coital next month, if we are not pregnant this cycle. We did a bunch of hormone tests before Clomid and everything came back normal, except I have hetero MTHFR. She prescribed a prenatal with added metafolin.

Ugh. Its kind of nerve wracking as is but then to think I may have 4 eggs waiting! Not sure how to handle this.

I would see an RE, imo.

Ditto on seeing an RE. FWIW, I have one friend who had just one baby on Clomid, but another who had triplets. I'd want to be monitored. Closely.
