Dow Jones plummeting, goverment facing possible shutdown....

Is our country imploding?

Just when I think it has gotten as bad as it is going to get we seem to continue our downward spiral.

Two words - President Perry.

You think he's going to make it better or worse?

It has not, in fact, gotten as bad as it can get. It can get worse. For example, if Perry becomes President.

(Did I really need to spell that out?)

In fairness, though, if Perry becomes President we won't so much be continuing our downward spiral as trading it in for a downward plummet.

No, I don't think Perry is going to make it better, I think it will get worse. I don't think Obama is going to make it better either. At this point both options are poor.

I'm the OP.

And why should I take Xanax? Sorry, but none of this bothers you? You aren't concerned about the current situation or your future? You must be a true Pollyanna!

Yes, I'm concerned. But what am I going to do about it?????

Well, if you're a "Real 'Merkun" selected to have Congressional representation, you might consider making your dissatisfaction known.

it's been bad for a LONG time.

When I get down about our personal situation, I try to remember how things could be a zillion times worse. We at least have a little money still in the bank, are both employed, etc, etc. Many people are not that fortunate.

I think the political grandstanding is ridiculous given the economy's precarious situation. Stop the crap about whose fault it is and just work together to fix the HUGE problems already. We've known the baby boomers were going to retire a LONG time ago, yet no one has had the balls to say "Hey, maybe we need to reevaluate this system" And what about the tax code? That's in need of a massive overhaul.

QUIT THE BITCHING AND FIX IT, MORONS!!!

Couldn't have said it better.

Yes, but how to fix it? I'd say it's a combination of raising taxes moderately, cutting military spending moderately, cutting Social Security benefits moderately, etc. But I don't see any of those things happening anytime soon because they would cause the politicians voting for them to be thrown out of office.

Also, even if we could all agree on a solution, we have to accept it may take close to a decade to repair the economy. It's not as if we can instantaneously repair the damages caused during the 2003-08 period.

Nobody said it would be easy...or fixed overnight. But the fact that no one is even willing to consider compromise is a huge problem.

So what if the compromises they have to reach will be hard to get to and might be tough for reelection? It HAS to be done. For the good of the country...and the world, at this point. MOST of the reason for Moody's downgrade was the political situation, not our current financial standing. The Cliffs we've seen coming for YEARS yet no one is willing to talk about because it might be tough politically? Yeah, those issues are what needs to be addressed.

It still boggles my mind that no one was willing to even discuss what was in the Debt Commission report. Why even bother having the darn commission if you aren't going to at least CONSIDER the things they discussed?

Exactly. It is time for the politicians to ask themselves if they are there for the good of the American people or if they are there for power and their egos.

Sadly I think the majority are there for their egos and the power.

The right decisions are not going to be popular, but it is never going to be fixed if they try and pander to every group out there. We'vfe got to try and get back to a common center, the extreme right and left are not working.

The Dow is at 10733. On Jan 23 2009 is was 8007. Thats a 34% gain. If that's your problem, there is no problem.

You've obviously never worked in a Congressional office....
