Ok, I'm the first to admit that I don't use cuss words on a regular basis. In fact, I'm kinda known to NOT cuss/swear because I feel that they're over-used. Honestly - if you think about it, would you be more insulted if someone called you a "B!tch" or if someone called you a "horridly spiteful nag""? Why say "F..., that hurt" when you get a paper cut? Then what do you say when you've broken your ankle hiking along Rock Creek trail?
Anyway, "douche" has become popular lately... It's shown up in TV, papers, DCUM,... loads of places. Maybe I'm the only one who REALLY doesn't want to equate the cold splashy concept with anything in my day to day life. Is it me? Am I the only one who thinks the word should be shunned from regular conversation? Guess I just need a reality check! |

Hey, I cuss like a damned trucker, and I also find douchebag to be way overused. It's like a word that's dirtier than "fuck" was discovered, and all the edgy people are trying to out-edge each other by using it in mundane settings.
Lookin' at you, Jon Stewart. |
| I agree that it's crass. I'll even admit that when I hear people use it, I absolutely think less of them. I guess I just think it "cheapens" them that they can't come up with a less vulgar word. |
No way that douchebag is dirtier than fuck. Douche or douchebag aren't even real swear words. Fuck will always reign at the top. |
| It's just a feminine hygene product. Geez... |
| Sometimes it just fits the person. |
|
What? This is not sudden. The word has been used in popular culture and slang for years.
I don't find it offensive - it's a product used to clean a vagina, big deal. People say dick and dickhead, and fuck, which is just a crass word for sex. It's just a good curse word. |
Agree with this. |
+1, and I'm not opposed to swearing. |
| Everyone doesn't. I don't know anyone who uses that word. |
|
I don't think it's "suddenly" in use, it's been in use for years with comedians, college kids, and sports folk. I think it's just becoming more mainstream to say. All of the men in my office say it with reckless abandon. It's fashionable to label someone this word, they think it's cool to say.
Bleech. |

I remember it as a very brief fad when I was in my early teens. When it resurfaced recently, more popular than ever, I was very surprised.
I think part of the appeal is that it's an interesting sounding word. I'm not offended, but I'm pretty tired of hearing it. (Also looking at Jon Stewart.) |
| Does anyone douche anymore? I think that now that douching is rare, the term douche bag can be considered a cuss word. The first time I remember hearing it was in the movie Terminator 2, the kid calls the two guys trying to help him escape "Jock douche bags) so it has been used as a prejorative for years. |
| I remember using this when I was on my "Junior Year Abroad" in France in 1987, and having a French person ask me what was wrong with a shower. |

The term is part of pop culture now. "Douchiest Colleges," from GQ, was posted this on the college board a while back. I admit I hadn't heard the term used as such previously, but I couldn't help laughing when I saw this:
