Why does every suddenly think the d-word is OK?!?

Yes, d- is like the word "s-ck", which is so commonly used. -Although people know what d- means, but many don't know the real meaning of s-. I attended a scholarly conference in Asia last year where non-Americans were saying s- a lot, clearly not realizing what it means.

Suck? Why can't you spell it out and what does it mean?

I like the word douchebag. It is extremely useful when no other word seems to fit. It has certain subtleties of meaning that a person who dislikes "cuss words" would probably not understand. I prefer to use all of the very useful and colorful words that are available to me because I find that the English language is fairly limited in its capacity for nuances of expression. I will try not to use it in the presence of those who might be offended by the use of "colorful language" but I will not stop using the word when it is appropriate and necessary.

I went to a high school named Duchesne.

Pronounced "douche - enn"

So, I've been tired of that word since 1980.

#1 Am I the only one that thought the "d-word" was DICK?

#2 Also, I thought telling someone , "You suck" implied that they suck the d-word (see #1).

#3 I don't think douche is over used, at least not in my circle.

"Douchebag" is a misogynist term, as are a lot of epithets that one can call another person. Think about it:

Motherfucker
Cocksucker
Pussy

All imply that femininity/things related to women are repellent.

That's why I like "asshole." It's an equal opportunity curse word.

Then is scumbag the male equivalent?

I totally thought the d-word was dick too. People have been saying both for years now...

My husband is a motherfucker and I am a cocksucker. Really it's foreplay at our house.

Yeah, but that's why dick and dickhead are around. And prick. Derogatory for men.

Good lord, some uptight people on here.
Lighten up.

If you don't cuss regularly, I doubt there is any profanity or vulgarity that would be appropriate to you.

I don't find douche/douchebag to be any more/less overused or offensive than any of the others. And, frankly, they all have their place.

I disagree. I avoid words like bitch, cunt, whore, and pussy whenever possible because those are misogynist terms. But a douche bag is a disgusting object (and a virtually useless misogynist invention at that). That is why I think that the term is especially suited to some especially unpleasant, probably misogynist types of men and I will use it to describe them whenever I see fit. I will also call them pricks, dicks, ball sacs, assholes, shitheads, and wankers but all of those terms have their own subtleties and they are not always the best choices. Oh, and I think cocksucker is a homophobic term rather than a misogynist one.

I thought this was hilarious. How'd your alma mater do?

I think that "motherfucker" is meant to imply incest, and "cocksucker" homosexuality. I might agree with you on "douchebag."

I've wondered before if that use of "pussy" came from "pusillanimous," though I doubt it. The funny thing about "pussy" as an insult is that "dick" is one too, and pussy suggests stereotypically female negative characteristics while dick suggests stereotypically male characteristics, but both are almost exclusively used to refer to men. Anyway, I think it's sexist, but there is the equally sexist "dick" insult.

All women should douche daily with a 1/3 solution of bleach, vinegar and hot soapy water. You should lay down for 30 minutes after insertion. It is the only known way to prevent the onset of retardation from the HPV vaccine.
