Suggestions for day trips to nice small towns?

Anonymous
We are looking for somewhere to go on a day trip this weekend with our 2 year old. Besides hiking in the mountains (which we love), we'd like to explore some of the small interesting towns in the area. Any suggestions for a town to go to for the day that's no more than a 2-3 hour drive? We have heard Annapolis and St. Michaels are nice, but are interested in some other options also.

Shepherdstown, WV is nice and about 1 hour and a half away. It is a university town so has lots of shops and restaurants. Harpers Ferry is also nearby as well as the Antietam battlefields which you can drive/walk around on. My DH and I have gone there many times over the years and just went back about a month ago without kids. We talked about bringing our kids next time because I think they would like it.

Luray Caverns is neat. Not sure if your 2 year old is too young. It's nice and cool though - a comfortable 50 degrees year around.

We went to Fredericksburg recently with our young kids. It was scorching hot (little shade), filled with sort-of junky touristy antique shops, and the restaurants were crummy.

Charlottesville is a long drive for a day trip. Probably impossible with little kids.

Traffic to get down to Fredericksburg can be horrible, too. I would not go south on 95 if I didn't have to even on a weekend.

Annapolis is a great place. My twins (who will turn 3) like the water so it was great for us. Plus they are very obsessed with boats. There is a great Italian place ,Maria's. It is so yummy!

I would second Shepherdstown. It is sweet town with a main street full of cute shops and restuarants (including a great bakery on the main street with yummy cupcakes!). And it is short enough ride to do in a day.

Here's a link to one recent Washington Post article, though I know there have been others. And the Washingtonian has also recently done articles on the town. Have a great weekend!

Ewww, Hagerstown. Really? I missed the charm, although I thought some of the buildings were interesting from a historical perspective.

I second the recommendation for Annapolis. Right by the water which is fun, and you can walk around the Naval Academy if you want to do something inside.

Richmond can be nice if you know where to go. Maymont Park, VA Museum of Arts, Edgar Allen Poe Museum, Shockoe Bottom, State Capitol Building, 6th street Market, and the Jefferson Hotel.
