Best crab cakes in the area?

Anonymous
I'm looking for a place to have crab cakes -- doesn't have to be super fancy but not a "wooden mallet and newspaper" type of place either. We're willing to drive an hour or two to get there. Any suggestions?

If you REALLY want the best crabs, it will probably be a wooden mallet type place. Bethesda Crab House is the best, in my opinion. But it's like a shack. Wooden mallets, crab guts on the walls, etc.

PP here- I didn't realize you said crab cakes. Bethesda Crab House has amazing, chunky crab-filled crab cakes. Fantastic. But you can also get great crab cakes at a non- wooden mallet type place. I've had the crab cakes at DC Coast and they were also delicious and chock full of chunky crab meat.

Market Lunch at Eastern Market. Good soft shell sandwiches too.

Angler's Inn (fancy) has best crab cakes I ever tried. All backfin lumps, not much filler.
If you want to make a long day trip out of it, Crisfield on the eastern shore has the freshest, cheapest authenic blue crab cakes anywhere.

Not in the area, but Coins in Ocean City, MD! Best. Ever.

If you're willing to cook at home, have big bucks and attitude to match, check out the ones at River Falls Seafood in Potomac Village. Just don't blame me if you get into some road rage argument with some random privileged blue hair in the parking lot. Near the Safeway.

CF Folks on 19th street. Looks kinda like a dive but they love food and are amazing cooks. Proves that you can't judge a book by it's cover.

I second Oceanaire (even though it's a chain!) And speaking of chains, the Great American Restaurant chain makes a good crabcake: Artie's, Coastal Flats, etc.

The Crab Royale at Rays the Steaks. You won't regret it.
