OK you should take your medicine and come back when you have some self control. I don't see what is funny about this. I am posting on a legitimate civil rights issue. The Cherokee slaves were freed during the war because they sided with the Confederacy. For years they were members of the cherokee nation. Now they are being excluded. I suppose any problem between minorities must give you glee. Sick.

"An 1866 treaty between the tribe and the federal government gave the freedmen and their descendants “all the rights of native Cherokees.”"

I'm curious what else is spelled out in this treaty. It would seem that this amendment would be in violation of the treaty and might have serious repercussions for the tribe.

I understand the desire for sovereignty. While race is an issue, my hunch is this is more about money. Fewer members means a bigger piece of the pie for remaining members. Ultimately, this reeks of the tyranny of the majority.

That's a bit of an over generalization. Sort of like using you as an example in order to say that all conservatives are idiots.

As for the person who wondered what else in is the treaty, if it is like most treaties between the US Government and the indigenous peoples there are any number of commitments by the Government that have not been fulfilled.

One other thing about this article, it's sort of ironic to hear people named "Chad Smith" and "Bill John Baker" talking about the importance of Cherokee identity. I agree with the poster above who thinks this is mostly about money.

no they are not
it was the white colonialists that purchased the blacks from the English and kept them as slaves for centuries.

Cherokees have a right for independence like the people in Zimbabwe and former Brittish colonies

Well it does turn out that they owned some black slaves, which is how this current situation came about. I don't want to make any overall judgments, but the historical record is what it is.
