When do you find out who your child's teacher is?

I am in Moco and was told we would get a postcard Thursday, yet our meet the teacher event is Thursday and our mail doesn't come until late in the afternoon. The event starts at 3:00. The school told me they WILL NOT tell me who the teacher is on the phone. Meanwhile, my brother, who also is in Moco, but a different school, got his postcard in the mail today. I'm new to montco and just moved here and am a little confused. What is with all the secrecy? In our old school district they printed next years teacher on last year's report card?

Mo Co is full of overbearing parents who think their child is the most special- special gifts, special needs, etc- and if the little darling doesn't get the teacher of choice, the overbearing parent will go up and threaten the principal until overbearing parent gets their way and the little darling is moved to the preferred teachers classroom.

"Poor Aiden won't have a successful year unless he is in the same class as Jaden due to his anxiety and poor social skills."

Having parents find out the placement at the open house lessens this.

Do not worry if you don't get your postcard in advance - I bet your school posts class lists rigt before the open house starts, so you will know who your child's teacher is and which classroom to visit.

I guess that explains the school's secretary's attitude when I called. We just moved here in June. I picked this so I could be close to my brother but we are in a different school and it sounds like a different world. My husband was transfered to DC and we have only been here a dew weeks and I have no idea what is going on.

Different schools do it differently. When you get to Open House, if you don't know the teacher yet, you will find out. I'm a MCPS teacher and even today, our first day back, there were some adjustments made to class lists (NOT by parent request, though!)

At our school, they post the class lists at the front door the day of the open house. So....you see who the teacher is and you walk to the room to meet them right then.

Let me add that we were never disappointed/upset with the selection. The school does a very nice job of matching.

My DS starts K this year and the school told me that I should be getting a post card from his teacher on Tuesday (today). So, we'll see.

If I hadn't have called the school last week (because I wanted to be sure they got all my son's paperwork transferred from another school), I would have no idea they are having a kindergarten "sneak peak" on Friday and may not have been able to arrange time off from work.

I will say as a new person to the school system, I'm surprised by the lack of communication. And lists...postcards, can't they email people?

My elementary school has over 800 children..that is alot of e-mails... We are told when the lists are posted at the school and can go look at any time or on the first day. The nice part of that is that you can see who else is in which class.

we found out via letter-mailed-home about 1 1/2 weeks ago

It's worth calling the school if you haven't heard - our letter went to a neighbor's house last year due to a directory misprint, and this year I just got the orientation packet for BCC orientation for someone else's kid (my oldest is entering second grade!)

If you are new to this county, you are probably not familiar with the demographics of parents in MCPS. Many, many parents do not have access to the internet at home or work and do not have email accounts, so email would not be the best way to communicate.

Our school posts the class lists outside the school the day before its open house. Some years they make class changes even the last week before classes so letting parents know any earlier wouldn't be feasible.

Not everyone has access to a computer. At my school, which is almost 60% FARMs, kids use computers at school or at the library. Not everyone is so lucky.

No they can't because they want to include everyone and some people might not have the internet so if you do get e mails you also get it in the mail.. such a waste of money in this area. You have to opt out of the paper stuff
