Harry Jaffe: Ditch Sidwell and send your kid to the new Wilson

"Memo to middle-class families struggling to afford private school at $30,000 a year: Take a YouTube tour of the new Wilson. Better yet, visit the campus. Talk to Cahall. Check with alumni. Consider switching Suzy or Jamal from Sidwell Friends School to Wilson. What you save in tuition will help you pay for the Ivy League school that might accept your kid."

i might be in the minority, but i'd rather spend the money on high school than college. i think it is a more sensitive time of life that will set you up for success later.

i went to a mediocre public high school and a brand name, boutique college. i would gladly flip those experiences with 20/20 hindsight.

Maybe the president will take this advice and support the dc publics.

You'd really be OK with your kid going to State U or U of State? Because you don't sound like you'd be OK with it.

LOL! Will love to see the day that a POTUS sends their kid(s) to a dc public. Not holding my breath.

Would they play the charte lottery or go in boundary? Last I checked the in bounds was Francis-Stevens.

These days it would be a security and paparzzi nightmare. And talk about test score pressure! God forbid a first child tested basic or worse.

I think it's worth much more to DC kids that Obamas (parents) visit public and host public and charters. Good for PR, fundraising, morale boosting without distractions of celebrity on a daily basis.

yes, i would. what says otherwise in my message? i went to a big State U for grad school where i taught undergrads, so i definitely understand what that experience is like. and DH is a professor at a brand name school. safe to say that we have a fair bit of experience with universities between us and yes, we would rather shell out for a boutique high school than for a boutique college.

The latter is worth a lot, and I appreciate it. However, the children should be in a DC public or public charter school, period. Can you imagine the stream of children of the administration, area politicians following suit? Can you imagine how freakin' ridiculously good our public schools would be if all those people poured their kids in city-wide?

Oh. And then Obama wouldn't be a total hypocrite. Nice cherry on top.

Jimmy Carter's daughter, Amy, attended DCPS when he was in office.
